A 37-year-old man, Monday Okoh
accused of raping his neighbour’s nine-year-old daughter (name withheld)
was on Monday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court
on three counts.
The police said Okoh who committed the
crime on Onifade Street, Aboru-Ipaja area of Lagos State reportedly
injured the girl in the forehead and damaged her lower limbs while
defiling the minor.
The suspect was, however, arrested by the police after committing the act.
The charge reads, “That you, Monday Okoh,
on June 15, 2014, at about 8pm, at Onifade Street, Aboru, Iyana-Ipaja
Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did indecently assault one
(name witheld), aged 9 years, with intent to have carnal Knowledge of
her and cause her bruises on her forehead and lower limbs.
The police prosecutor, DSP Etim Ekankuk,
said the offences were punishable under sections 134, 137 and 135 of the
Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. A.A.
Demi-Ajayi, admitted him to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two
sureties in like sum. The matter was adjourned till September 17.
The high rate of rape cases these days is becoming alarming. No wonder the Deputy
Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire called for life
imprisonment, without an option of fine, for convicted rapist.
