Undergraduate remanded for allegedly killing co-tenant

A 27-year-old final year student of the University of Calabar, Ezong Lydia, has been remanded in prison following the alleged murder of her co-tenant in Lagos, Mr Salaudeen Musa.

Lydia, who was staying with her parents on Cemetary Road, Amukoko area of Lagos because of the just suspended ASUU strike, allegedly pushed the deceased during an argument, which led to his death.

It was learnt that the deceased’s brother and Lydia had had a misunderstanding, which the suspect reported at the police station.
The deceased’s brother was said to have been arrested and detained in the cell.

After learning that his brother was in police detention, the victim was said to have applied for his bail, but was asked to get the complainant.
It was learnt that the 45-year-old, instead of going to Lydia, decided to take up the matter with her father.

Lydia was said to have interrupted in the discussion, which led to an argument.
The police claimed that Lydia pushed the deceased, and he slumped and died.

The investigating police officer, Sergeant Olojede Mayowa, in the remand request form, said the police were relying on eyewitnesses’ accounts.

Igbo in Lagos sack traditional rulers

The executive of Igbo-speaking community in Lagos State has sacked some Ezes over a recent controversial visit to a governor, who allegedly gave them staff of offices.  A statement in Lagos by the community’s President-General, Chief Ebere Ubani, described the visit as demeaning. It said: “With this singular action, the affected Ezes have abdicated their Ezeship and the Igbo-speaking community the authentic and legal body that installed them, hereby declares their stools vacant with immediate effect.  “The Igbo-speaking community in Lagos State shall look into issues dispassionately and will not relent in wielding the big stick where necessary; as such Ezes have lost moral authority to preside over their respective domains in Lagos State, as their allegiance has now shifted.”

CALABAR —A three-year-old boy, Victor Offiong Edem, was abducted by an unknown person at the Assemblies of God’s Church 14, Nnamdi Azikiwe Street, Calabar South during Sunday service, December 15, 2013.  The father of the boy,  Mr Offiong Edem, a staff of College of Health Technology, Calabar said he took his family to the church to thank God for his goodness to him in 2013.  He said after the service which was also the  church’s Thanksgiving Day, he went to work and left  Victor  in company of his wife,  Angelica and his other son, Samuel but was later informed that Victor had gone missing.  He said: “I do work on Sundays. Soon after giving my offering, I went to work leaving behind my wife, my first son and Victor in the church  only to be called later that Victor had gone missing.”  Mother of the missing boy said after the close of service, she had a short discussion with some  church members and after that  “I went to pick my bag where I kept it not far away from where I stood and when  I turned back, I asked Samuel where Victor was and he said he could not find him.”  She said obviously the person was monitoring her and the children and as soon as her eyes were turned away from the child, the person took away the boy.  According to Angelica,“My son is a healthy and happy boy and I know God will bring him back to me  no matter where the person may have taken him to.”  Pastor Chukwu Ekeke, head pastor of the church, said: “That is the first time an unfortunate incident like this will happen in this church and prayers have been said and  I know God will certainly bring back that boy.”  A police source at the Mbukpa police station where the matter was reported said investigations are  going on to track down the  abductor. -

Suspected cultists kill OOU lecturer:

ABEOKUTA— Tragedy struck, yesterday, at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, in Ijebu North area of  Ogun State when a lecturer, Dr Segun Onabanjo, was  shot dead by suspected cultists. Onabanjo who until his death was a senior lecturer at the Department of Sociology in the university, was said to have been killed by the assailants who stormed his residence in Odomolasa area of Ilese-Ijebu and broke into his home at about 1:00 a.m. Vanguard gathered that while  his assailants were attempting to break into his house, he was reportedly shouting “e bami gbe ibon mi (kindly bring me my gun)” to his kids and relatives in an attempt to scare away the armed men. The gunmen eventually, in the wee hours, shot the lecturer dead and carted away some personal items. It was learnt that the body of the deceased had been deposited at the mortuary. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the killing, saying the command was on the trail of the suspected killers who escaped through a nearby bush and would do everything possible to bring them to justice. The police spokesman said some of the suspects sustained injuries in the gun duel and urged members of the public to promptly report anybody found with bullet wounds to security agents. “The incident was quite unfortunate. The police command is seriously investigating this case and the suspects would be brought to justice. We are already working on some leads; the police combed the area and found blood stains at the back of the house of the lecturer. The police traced the blood and hopefully, it will help in this case,” he said. Adejobi appealed to residents to be careful in handling such crime situation, saying they should be wary of showing off even if they have firearms. He called on medical doctors in the state to alert the command in case they notice anyone with gun wounds in their hospitals.

They Are Attacking Me Because Of 2015 - Jonathan

They Are Attacking Me Because Of 2015 - Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday hit back at  his critics and opposition parties, accusing them of  painting his  administration “bad before the global community.”
He therefore warned that  he would  not allow their selfish  ambition for the 2015 general election  to destroy the country. His warning is coming six days after an 18-page letter in which a  former President, Chief  Olusegun Obasanjo, made scathing remarks about  his  administration was made public. It also came less than 24 hours after the opposition All Progressives Congress called on the National Assembly to immediately    commence impeachment proceeding against Jonathan for alleged gross misconduct.
Although he  has yet to personally respond to Obasanjo’s letter and the APC’s  call for his impeachment, the   Peoples Democratic Movement  and the  Nigeria Labour Congress on Monday, said he needed to do so because the allegations levelled against him by the former President were weighty.
At a  lecture and award ceremony in Abuja on Monday, Jonathan told his critics to be cautious in attacking his administration because it was the selfish ambition  of some politicians that   led to the “wrongful overthrow”  of   the  Shehu Shagari administration in 1983.
He was represented at  the  annual  lecture, the  third in a series  by Nigerian Pilot Newspapers and Nigerian Newsworld,  by the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku.
The President claimed that  the  criticisms against his administration were not constructive enough to challenge his  development strides.
Jonathan, who  said he had  developed a “thick skin against such criticisms”, however advised politicians to thread with caution as their actions could destabilise the democractic structures already in place in the country.
He said, “There is a difference between ambition and reality. Go for your ambition, nobody is disturbing you because it is a free world. Go and compete, but don’t pull down this country called Nigeria because of your personal ambition. It is unacceptable.
“I think there is a difference between debates and insults. I reject insults and the fact that I am a public officer doesn’t give anybody the liberty to insult me. Most of the time you cannot detach the Office of the President and honour of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“There are people who are honestly trying to put things down for this country to move on. I think we can see the difference between facts and fiction.
“Let us not continue to behave as if we can pull down our own house; we as politicians and public servants should not behave as if we were picked on the streets. You don’t just go and pour acid on the faces of public officers.
“When Shagari was overthrown in 1983, there was a lot of noise that the government was not doing anything and nothing was not said about Shagari’s regime.
“Shagari was overthrown amidst lies….The greatest shame of this country is Ajaokuta Steel Complex. If Shagari was there, by 1986, he would have completed Ajaokuta.”
But Maku took a swipe at  the media, stressing that on a daily basis, they were  awash with highly fictional information.
He said, “If you look through our media reports today, we see insults and abuses, every day. If somebody did not abuse Mr. President, it will look as if there is no journalism on that day.
“We are talking about our country, our nation’s institutions and democracy;  we are talking about setting standards for this democracy, standards of behaviour, standards of conduct and standards of principles of behaviour and every democracy must be parliamentary. We should not go personal, but we are going too personal.”
Maku  compared  the media   to   a mirror,  which when  broken, gives  a false image.
He said, “We must not destroy the mirror and present the image as ugly.
“The mirror is very important in conveying the good image of our people. We have completely ignored issues on the ground and we are embarking on personality debates.
“The way we are sensationalising the development of this nation in public debates,  is so annoying and it is not supposed to be so. I am a big time journalist.
“But there is a difference between reporting events and articulating a position because the media are supposed to articulate public debates. When the media embark  on abuse and insults, the people will be confused.”
He also stated that the liberty being enjoyed by Nigerians  had  been taken for granted simply because   “the  President   believes in the rule of law.”
