Okada rider rapes 14-year-old tuberculosis patient in Lagos

A 35-year-old man, Andrew Ekanem, has been arrested by the police for allegedly raping his neighbour’s daughter in the Bariga area of Lagos State.

 

PUNCH Metro learnt that the 14-year-old victim was still undergoing a six-month treatment for tuberculosis when she was attacked by the suspect on Monday morning.

Source was told that the victim was the first of four children. The mother of the victim, Mrs. Adenike Aderinkomi, a trader, Punch at their house on Akilo Street that her daughter went to ease herself in the early hours of the morning when she was cornered by the Cross River State indigene.

She claimed the suspect penetrated her daughter through the anus and vagina.

She said, 

“It was around 2am on Monday when my daughter woke up and said she wanted to go and ease herself.

“I was having my quiet time and didn’t know when I slept off. I woke up about 15 minutes later and didn’t see her in the room.

“I woke her father up and he said he didn’t know her whereabouts. We both became anxious and went outside to search for her.

“Another neighbour also joined us in the search.”

She said she was shouting her daughter’s name in the backyard, but did not get any response.

Aderinkomi said about 10 minutes later, her husband saw their daughter coming out of Ekanem’s room.

Our correspondent learnt people overwhelmed her with a barrage of questions, but the Primary six pupil insisted she went to ease herself.

Her mother said she pulled her away from the growing crowd of neighbors and pressed her to talk.

“My daughter became afraid. She then told me that while she was on her way to ease herself, Ekanem grabbed her and took her inside his room to sleep with her. She said while I was shouting her name, he covered her mouth.

“People seized him and wanted to beat him up. But I had to quickly report the matter to the police very early in the morning so people would not take the law into their hands,” she said.

Aderinkomi said she was surprised because when her daughter fell critically ill in February, last year, Ekanem assisted her family in taking her to Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for traditional treatment.

PUNCH Metro learnt that after the alleged rape, the victim was taken to the Gbagada General Hospital for testing and treatment.

A medical report, which was sighted by our correspondent, revealed that the victim sustained bruises in her private parts.

The paper, signed by one Dr. Ojekunle of the hospital, stated, “The child was caught with a neighbor around 2am today. She confessed that the neighbor called her on her way to ease herself and forced her and had sex with her.

“She sustained bruises in her anus and vagina (as a result of) sexual assault.”

Punch correspondent was told that the victim had been taken to an undisclosed orthodox church for “prayers and deliverance”.

A carpenter, Tunde Hassan, who lives in the house where the incident happened, expressed surprise, saying nobody imagined Ekanem could do such a thing.

Hassan said, “Up till now, I cannot comprehend what happened. The man was a gentle man and he never fought or made trouble with anybody.

It was learnt that the suspect was arrested by policemen from the Bariga Police Division.

A police source told the source that investigation revealed the suspect was fond of the act and usually induced his victims with money.

He said, “That was not his first time of doing such a thing. This particular girl, he had slept with her about three times. He was always giving her money ranging from N200 to N500.

“But this time, he was caught red-handed and that was why the girl’s parents are insisting on taking him to court. When he was queried, he didn’t give any reason for his behavior. He’s just fond of sleeping with little girls.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had been taken to court.

PREGNANT WOMAN DIES DURING A MARATHON S*X WITH LOVER IN ANAMBRA

The police in Anambra State are interrogating a man to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a seven-month pregnant woman during a marathon sex bout with him in Onitsha.

 

The man (names withheld), according to a police source, had allegedly taken the deceased to an undisclosed hotel in Onitsha, only for the hotel staff to discover that the woman was dead in the morning.

 

The incident, the source said, occurred on Tuesday when the man allegedly checked into the hotel with the heavily pregnant woman, only to find out in the morning that his partner could not wake up on Wednesday morning.

A resident’s account

Though the police in Onitsha Area Command refused to give details on the incident, a resident of the area said the suspect and the deceased were just love birds.

He said the suspect had lodged into the hotel room and invited the deceased through a phone call.

 

The source further faulted rumours that the woman died as a result of charms made by her husband, adding that it was possible that the woman died of exhaustion from the marathon sex romp.

 

He urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

At press time, nobody from the suspect or deceased’s family had been identified, as the corpse was deposited in an undisclosed mortuary in Onitsha by the police.

 

At the Inland Town Police Division, Onitsha, the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Cosmas Eze, refused to comment on the incident but referred Vanguard to the Area Commander, ACP Benjamin Wordu, for clarifications.

 

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Uche Ezeh, said the command received the information concerning the incident, disclosing that the suspect had been arrested and case transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID, Awka, for further investigations.

13 Women Men Should Never Marry - Read

 

The Word instructs that he who finds a wife finds a good thing (Prov. 18:22). It doesn’t say that every woman qualifies as a good wife. These are two completely different things. A man should be looking for a helpmate.

1. Blinded Brenda. For this woman, the motto is "It's all about me." 2. Dominating Donna. This is a woman who doesn’t acknowledge the order God has established. She wants to redefine the Bible, as she believes it is outdated for this generation. She won’t be happy just wearing the pants. She won’t stop until she has you wearing the skirt. Don’t just walk away from this woman—run.
3. Holy Holly. This woman can be exhausting. She quotes the Bible in everything she does. She is the "only one" who hears from God correctly. She has no real joy in living. No sense of humor. If she laughed, her face would crack. Her comfort and joy come from the law of the Lord.
4. Trophy Tina. This is the woman most men are drawn to. She has all the right curves in all the right places. But just like the signs on a winding road, beware of dangerous curves ahead. She constantly hashes and rehashes the failures or losses of life. Many times this woman will battle addictions to numb her pain, whether it’s drugs, alcohol or food. Her pains will become your worst nightmare. Remember you are looking for a helpmate, not a mate to help.
8. Broke-as-a-Joke Julie. This is a woman who has credit issues. She owes money to everybody, and she will have no sense of restraint when it comes to spending money. Just as it is important for a woman to know a man’s financial status, a man should know a woman’s. If she can’t budget her own money, she won’t have any trouble spending yours.
9. Married Mindy. You would think this would be obvious, but unfortunately it is not. If a married woman is sending you signals or if you’re married and a single woman is sending you signals, beware. Her house is a filthy mess, and her car looks like a trash dump. She doesn’t take care of herself in any way. She doesn’t have a healthy love for herself and won’t be able to love you correctly until she does.
12. Sad Sally. This woman has no joy. She seems sad most of the time and has the attitude of “If it wasn’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.” Attitude will determine altitude—how far you will go. Like a helium balloon, you are constantly having to pump this woman up, only to find her deflated in the morning. Look for a woman who knows how to encourage herself, and you will find one who will encourage you and won’t weigh you down.
13. Nervous Nellie. This woman is afraid of everything—afraid to drive, afraid to fly, afraid to try anything new. She will have to see it to believe it. I think it’s only fair to say Proverbs 31 describes several women, not just one. Solomon had several wives, and this is a combined list of many. To expect a woman to fulfill all of these qualities is unrealistic. But there are a lot of women who meet most of the guidelines in Proverbs 31. I would say the list I have summarized here would be Proverbs 32—women to avoid.

MALI RECORDS 2ND EBOLA DEATH

A nurse at a private clinic in Bamako has become the second victim of the Ebola virus in Mali, radio reports said on Wednesday.

 

According to the reports, the nurse was infected by a patient from Guinea who was treated at the same clinic and has since died.

Mali has only been lightly affected by the outbreak of the deadly virus, which has infected over 10,000 people and caused nearly 5,000 deaths, mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

 

The reports say there was one other death from the virus in Mali in October in the western city of Kayes.

 

However, 15 people have been quarantined. (NAN)

FEDERAL GOVT UNVEILS NEW N100 NOTES - SEE PHOTOS

President Goodluck Jonathan has formally unveiled the new N100 notes at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

 

The short ceremony which was initially scheduled for last Wednesday did not hold then because of the President’s journey to Burkina Faso.

 

Vice President Namadi Sambo and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Governor, Godwin Emefiele, joined the President to unveil the note during the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.

 

Shortly after presenting the note, Emefiele said it was issued to commemorate the 100 years of the nation’s amalgamation.

 

He listed some countries that had before now issued currencies to mark epochal events to include Morocco, Russia and Costa Rica among others.

 

 

 

Joy Turned Into Tragedy: Jehovah’s Witness new mother dies after she refuses to be given blood

A mother who gave birth to a baby conceived naturally after years of failed fertility treatment died in hospital after refusing a blood transfusion because she was a Jehovah’s Witness.

According to London Evening Satndard, Adeline Keh, 40, became critically ill after her son Mawsi was delivered by caesarean section at the Homerton hospital. She died three weeks later in another hospital after refusing potentially life-saving treatment.

Today her husband told of his grief that “we never came home as a family” as it emerged that the case was one of four maternal deaths in eight months involving the Homerton.
The hospital, in Hackney, has asked NHS England to review the deaths to check for any evidence of common failures in care. The review is expected to be completed next month.
Speaking for the first time since his wife’s death, Kwaku Keh told the Standard: “My wife and I were best friends. We had been trying to have a baby for some time but it had not happened for us even with the help of IVF.
 
Best friends: Adeline Keh with her husband Kwaku “Then in 2013 my wife got pregnant without medical intervention and our only son was delivered by caesarean section. I was overjoyed and could not wait for them to come home.”

Mrs Keh remained in hospital after her son’s birth on September 18 last year to receive antibiotics for an infection. She developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and was transferred to Papworth, a specialist heart and lung hospital in Cambridge.

She had told doctors of her refusal to receive blood products, and lawyers confirmed her wishes had to be obeyed. She was put on a machine at Papworth but it could not effectively re-oxygenate her blood without a transfusion. She died two days later.

An inquest last month found Mrs Keh died on October 19 last year from a combination of ARDS, sepsis, an infection in the caesarean wound and “refusal of transfusion on religious grounds”.

Coroner Belinda Cheney, in a narrative verdict, said Mrs Keh died from a “rare infective complication”. The source of the infection had been impossible to detect until the post-mortem and the decision not to receive blood “may have compromised the final medical intervention”.


Mr Keh, a lawyer living in Walthamstow, said: “Each time I went to pick her up [from the Homerton] I was told that she could not come home. Eventually my wife lost her fight and passed away and we never got to come home as a family.”

He said he was arrested in Rivers State after one Alhaji who buys stolen cars from him was arrested in Abuja a fortnight ago.

He said he was still surprised on what was happening to him because he never thought he would be arrested.

How I Survive Yobe School Blast: Witness Narrates (Must Read)

A teacher of the Government Comprehensive Senior Science Secondary School, Potiskum, Yobe State, who survived a suicide bomb attack have recounted his ordeal.

The witness, a teacher, who did not want his name to be mentioned for security reason managed to speak with journalists

He said the bomb went off from the bag of a young schoolboy who walked up to the assembly ground after an unknown car left him at the gate of the school at about 7:30am. The boy was carrying a heavy schoolbag on his shoulder.


“Many of us sighted him as he was dropped off by the car and watched how he confidently walked up to the assembly ground pretending to be one of the students”, said the witness. “But unfortunately, he was immediately spotted by one of the duty teachers who noticed his odd appearance amongst other students, by carrying a bag to the assembly ground, even though the school is a boarding school”.
“The teacher on duty called his attention, asking him why he had to bring his bag to the assembly ground, but the bomber remained silent, ignoring the teacher. His attitude towards the teacher drew the attention of other students who milled around him to find out who he was. The teacher then moved closer to him, thinking he might be a new student on transfer since most of the students could not recognise him”.

According to the source the teacher and some of the senior prefects who were not satisfied with the impoliteness of the fake schoolboy who continued to ignore the teacher, decided to force him to kneel down.

“It was during the process of asking him to observe the punishment of kneeling down that the explosive in the bag went off and unfortunately killed many of the students including the teacher who had inched closer to the scene to see what was happening”.

The teacher added that he survived because he did not go closer to the student, thinking it was one of those usually rude schoolboys that the teacher was dealing with.

The blast which was considered one of the worst attacks on schools left the assembly ground littered with abandoned footwear, books, bags and body parts.

Hopelessness and failure are founded in our hearts and in not in our circumstances. We must learn to trust in the power of grace, because it is grace that causes hope to triumph. In our darkest despair it is the power of His grace alive in us that causes hope to rise, bringing light and life to our despair and failure.

In life there will be times when you feel as if you are standing on the edge of a cliff spanning a chasm as wide as the Grand Canyon, looking deep down into the gorge of despair, as your soul cries out for relief and rescue, but there seems to be no hope and no comfort. There are times that your mind seems frayed on the verge of sanity as the ponderosity of your burden seems to have broken every escape, and collapsed all hope. But I say to you fear not and be not dismayed as Christ is ever-present working on your behalf, supernaturally directing all circumstances and events, rescuing and delivering you from your all your desperation and doubt.

There are many avenues within secular society that promise to cure-all with self-help videos and self promotion books that tell you to be positive, lift yourself up and will your way to win. As we read and listen to these self-help gurus we will try to will our way to victory, coming up with plan after plan, method after method, hoping to survive and trying to improve our lives.  We think that if we develop a new workout schedule to better our bodies; upgrade the scenery in a newer neighborhood; buy a newer car, change relationships etc., that we can get ahead. But the reality is that in none of these things there is comfort or rescue. The truth is, as you are breathing in the desperation from your bone-dry desert of despair, choking on hopelessness of it all, while trying to find any way out that you will come to the realization that you must trust in Christ. He is your Anchor of Hope that has already secured your victory upon the cross.

If you are finding it difficult to make the right decisions in your life, you are relying on your own limited vision and insight. Put all your doubt, fear, indecision, hopelessness, anxiety and pain before the powerful Throne of Grace and let Jesus guide you in your decisions. He will guide you by His Spirit to make the right decisions, removing all that is weighing you down in your parched wilderness of self-doubt. He will overcome for you just as He overcame the world by the power of His grace poured out upon all humanity at Calvary.

The Kardashian Family Disapproves Kylie Jenner-Tyga Relationship

The relationship between Kylie Jenner and Tyga has been an endless source of controversy since it began, and for good reason.
Kylie is 17 and Tyga turns 25 next month, which means that their romantic involvement isn't just creepy, it may be criminal.

In fact, when Tyga was arrested in Los Angeles last night, it was widely rumored that it had something to do with his relationship with Tyga.

The cause of the arrest is still not known, but sources say it had nothing to do with Kylie. Still, it's not hard to see why so many assumed that it did.

After all, Kylie's famous family members are reportedly doing everything in their power to put a stop to her relationship:
"They almost unanimously disapprove of Kylie dating Tyga," a source tells Radar Online. "It isn't just Kim that doesn't like Tyga. Pretty much no one trusts him."
Insiders say Kim has tried to force Kylie to break up with Tyga, but not due to their age difference.
Tyga was previously engaged to Kim's best friend Blac Chyna. Like many others, Kim believes Tyga broke up with Blac in order to pursue Kylie. She also reportedly believes tat Tyga is using Kylie for fame:

"Tyga has known the family and Kylie forever," the source says. "It is strange that he only takes an interest in Kylie now that she has this minute of fame."

Woman Finds Missing Husband, Nine Years After He Disappeared, Married to Someone Else

When Karen Marx's husband Adam disappeared, vanishing without a note, a call, or a trace in 2005, she believed she would never see him again.

One can certainly understand why, but she searched and she searched, until one day recently, she found the man she married after nearly a decade.

The twist? He was married to some else.

"I just thought, 'How could he get married again?' " Karen said, reflecting on her alarming discovery. "Am I dead? What did he do with my identity?"
It wasn't the first time Adam Marx had done something similar. He left another woman while still married, and he once left Karen as well, remarkably.
Karen first met Adam when he was still married. "I figured, 'He's going to get divorced, and this means he really wants to be with me and the kids,'" she said.
"We'll be one big, happy family."
Adam did eventually divorce his first wife and marry Karen a year later, on Valentine's Day. Shortly after, he disappeared. That time, he left a note.
"The first time he left me, it was like somebody ripped my heart out," Karen said. "He basically told me it was all my fault and he couldn't handle my kids."
"My ultimatum was, 'If you ever do this to me again, I won't take you back,'" she said, recalling what she told him then. "I did it once. I won't do it twice."
He did return a few months later, but things soured once again, and Adam peaced out, leaving no clue where he went but leaving her saddled with debt.
"I was trying to start a cleaning business, and after he left me, that totally ruined everything," Karen said, and heard nothing from him until this year.
Needless to say, she was shocked.
"He told people it was his first marriage," she said. "I think people need to start doing their job and thoroughly, especially when it comes to something like this."
"I consider myself married," she said, even after all this time. "I thought when you married someone, you married him for life, through sickness and health."
It's unclear how she found him, but Adams Marx faces charges of bigamy, fraud and making a false statement on a marriage license, according to reports.

Karen plans to file for divorce. No surprise there. Hopefully she can accomplish that goal legally, having spent so much of her life without any closure.

Tragedy: Man Stabs Best Friend To Death For Correcting Him

A 25-year old lottery agent, Olawale Salau was on Wednesday last week stabbed to death by his childhood friend, Kamoru Kushimo on Alafia Street, in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State for asking him to change his ways. 

 

A resident who spoke to Punch said the deceased had threatened to end his relationship with the suspect if he did not change his ways after he facilitated his bail for attacking a neighbor.

“In the afternoon of that fateful day, he verbally assaulted him for hours while we were all drinking at the club. Salau did not answer him and people asked Kushimo to stop, but he refused. Then he said he wanted their friendship to end. Salau told him that if that was what he wanted, he was satisfied with the decision. But we all became surprised as Kushimo said he wanted to fight with him.

While we were all trying to settle the quarrel, Kushimo grabbed a bottle and smashed it against the wall. The splinters fell on me and injured another friend of ours. But Salau held him from using the bottle. I tried separating them,” he said.

They reportedly went their separate ways after some community leaders intervened. However, unknown to Salau, his friend had gone to waylay him in the dark, armed with a knife. A resident said he had gone to attend to the injured friend when he was returning to the street and saw the suspect racing towards him…

“I didn’t know he had stabbed Salau in the chest and armpit with the knife. But I ran after him. He wanted to jump the fence of a house into the next street, but I grabbed him. He pleaded with me to release him, but I told him he was going nowhere. It was then I saw Salau screaming that he had been stabbed. I handed Kushimo over to an elderly man and tried to help Salau up. But he was down and nobody even came near because it was dark.”

The victim’s boss, Taofeek Olaoye, said the 25-year-old could not make it as he died before he could get medical help.

Boys In Police Net For Homosexuality in Lagos

Lagos State Police Command has arrested two teenage boys identified as Gideon Harrison and Ifeanyi Ezeorji, for allegedly having s3x with each other in Ikotun area of Lagos.

According to reports, the boys were caught in the process of carrying out the act. Gideon, 19, was reported to have allegedly penetrated Ifeanyi, 14, through the anus.
They were arrested on October 23, 2014 by policemen from the Ikotun Police Division.
It was gathered that Ifeanyi is student of Igando High School, Ikotun Road, while Gideon has already completed his secondary school education. Reports say Gideon is in the habit of sleeping with boys in the area.

An eyewitness, Toheeb Adekunle, who stays on Muka Street, Ijegun Road and works inside the Ikotun Motor Park, disclosed that he caught the two boys in the act, and reported the matter to the police.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu confirmed the arrest and it was gathered that the two teenagers have been taken to the State Criminal Investigations Department in Yaba, Lagos and would be charged to court soon.

Ifeanyi’s mother, Mrs. Chinyere Ezeorji, claimed her son was a responsible boy who would never indulge in such an act. She added that her son is still undefiled.

How Mali Thwarts an Ebola Outbreak

Mali’s Ebola scare is not yet over. But with a quick diagnosis, extensive communication, and no shortage of luck, authorities and partners may be able to limit the number of cases to one.

Using old-fashioned detective work, public health workers in Mali, one of the world’s poorest nations, working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, tracked and quarantined 108 people in two cities and a few roadside towns who may have had contact with a 2-year-old girl from Guinea who died of Ebola on Oct. 24.

There was even a car chase: The last bus the family traveled on during a 700-mile journey from Guinea was stopped on a rural highway, emptied out and disinfected.

A 21-day quarantine since the little girl’s death on Oct. 24 is almost over, and 41 of the 108 Malians in quarantine are due to be released Tuesday, and the remainder by Friday. Since none are showing symptoms, health officials are allowing themselves to hope that their quick response has kept Mali’s first outbreak to a single case.

If so, Mali will join Senegal and Nigeria in having proved yet again that rapid reactions can stop Ebola. In contrast, the initial outbreak in Guinea festered unaddressed for months before it exploded.

“I’m actually feeling very good right now,” Dr. Rana Hajjeh, who led the C.D.C. advisory team, said Friday. “We feel reassured that most of the danger is over.”

The case also illustrates how even people in close contact with victims do not necessarily get the disease, which spreads when infectious fluids get into an open cut, or a nose, eye or mouth.

Remarkably, no one in Mali who touched the girl, Fanta Condé, is yet sick. Not the woman she called her grandmother, her 5-year-old sister or her uncle, who all spent three days traveling with her from Beyla, Guinea. Not Dr. Abdouramane Koungoulba, the pediatrician who first examined her on Oct. 21, nor two traditional healers who saw her earlier, nor any of a dozen other doctors or nurses who gave her a transfusion and intravenous hydration and cleaned up her vomit and diarrhea in the 48 hours before she died.

Nor, apparently, are any of the dozens of bus passengers, taxi drivers, family friends or other contacts she had while traveling.

The episode also drew attention to an unusual decision by President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta: Unlike most West African countries, Mali has not closed its border with an Ebola-affected neighbor — in this case, Guinea.

That is partly for practical reasons. There are so many gravel roads crossing the long border that closing it is probably impossible.

Dr. Abdou Salam Gueye, a C.D.C. investigator, explained that closing the border would violate an honored Malian principle of diatiguiya (pronounced JAH-tih-GEE), the belief that hospitality to friends and even strangers is obligatory. It extends back centuries, to the days when Mali was the core of a great West African empire, and travelers with introductions were welcomed like family.

Michel Sidibé, the Malian executive director of U.N.AIDS, the United Nations’ H.I.V.-fighting agency, said diatiguiya is a Mandingo tradition.

“If I come to my diatiguiya’s house, he cannot close the door,” Mr. Sidibé explained. “His home is my home. Even if I am sick, he must bring me in. And this has extrapolated into ‘I cannot close the border.’ ”

Mali’s harrowing brush with Ebola began last month with a woman’s selfless act: trying to rescue two young girls in her family from the disease. Aminata Gueye Tamboura, 45, fetched them from their ailing family in Guinea, the cradle of the epidemic, then took them aboard buses and taxis, back to her home in Kayes, in northwest Mali. (Mrs. Tamboura, although called Fanta’s grandmother, is actually the second wife of Fanta’s grandfather in polygamous marriage.)

Fanta had a 104-degree fever and an unstoppable nosebleed by the time she was hospitalized. Health officials feared she had seeded the virus all along the route, potentially turning Mali into the fourth nation engulfed by the disease.

The child’s family in Guinea did not believe the virus existed and rejected medical help, even as relatives began to die there, including Fanta’s father, said Dr. Ibrahima Soce Fall, leader of the W.H.O. team in Mali. Fanta’s mother remained in Guinea with a 3-month-old baby because she had to observe 40 days of mourning for her husband, Dr. Koungoulba said.

Ms. Tamboura, the girls and an uncle left Beyla, a small city, on Oct. 18 in a 10-passenger “bush taxi,” and crossed the border the next day. Some passengers said Fanta was given acetaminophen to lower her fever and avoid detection. Ms. Tamboura denied it.

During a three-hour layover in Bamako, Mali’s capital, the family took taxis to and from the compound of family friends, and rested there. That compound is now also quarantined with 25 people inside; the government delivers food and has posted guards to make sure no one leaves.

In Kayes, Ms. Tamboura took Fanta to two different traditional healers, known as marabouts, and then to a neighbor, a former doctor, who urged her to go to Fousseyni Daou Hospital, which she did on Oct. 21.

Initially, Dr. Koungoulba said, she told him Fanta was a local child, so he did not suspect Ebola. He did wear gloves, but no other protection. That evening, Ms. Tamboura’s sister admitted that Fanta was Guinean, so he ordered an Ebola test. But it took 24 hours for a car to arrive from Bamako and fetch the sample.

When it turned up positive on Oct. 23, Dr. Koungoulba kept asking himself: “Did I do everything I should? Did I touch her dirty diaper or the blood running from her nose?”

Dr. Hajjeh, who had just finished helping Mali devise a response plan in case the disease ever arrived, said she was at the airport when she heard the test results were positive.

“I canceled my flight and stayed,” she said.

At the hospital, about a dozen staff members were quarantined, as were Fanta’s family and all 40 patients and their families, who sleep under trees on the dusty grounds to help care for the sick.

The quarantine was partly for their own protection, doctors said, since there had been angry reactions elsewhere in Mali to earlier suspected cases, which turned out to be false alarms.

Jennifer Lawrence is a woman who knows what she wants in life, and in love. On the latter front, it's not really shocking what the star says she looks for.

In the new issue of French magazine Madame Figaro, the 24-year-old reveals that the ideal mate for her is "one who allows her to be herself in all situations."

"Otherwise, you might as well stay single."

Lawrence, who might be back together with Chris Martin, is currently overseas as part of a massive PR tour for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.

That's just part of her job as an A-list star, and the accompanying interest in her personal life is something she says she has been very reluctant to accept.

Admitting it took days to agree to portray Katniss Everdeen, she says, "I realized that whatever I do, at any level, I would lose a part of my private life."

"For each 'everyday' photo published," the paparazzi-averse Oscar-winner says, "I generally spent three hours playing cat and mouse with photographers."

"I always had a very clear idea of the type of course I wanted - acting, that's all. Of course, by contract, I must assure a media presence to promote my work.
