Report Tenancy Agreement Fees Higher Than 10 Percent, Lagos Govt Tells Residents

The Lagos State Government has once more cautioned against the collection of tenancy agreement fees beyond the stipulated 10 per cent and has asked residents to report such abnormality to the authorities.

At the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, warned against violation of the state’s tenancy law, which caps tenancy agreement fees at 10 per cent.

“We have been overwhelmed by reports of the activities of these unscrupulous elements making life hard for Lagosians with agreements and commissions that are like asking for an arm and a leg,” Odunuga-Bakare said in a statement issued by the Lagos State Government.

“We are calling on members of the public not to keep silent but to report such agents and landlords to us, for the government cannot be everywhere, every time.”

She reiterated the restated the Lagos State Government’s stance against the imposition of excessive tenancy agreement fees, reminding all stakeholders within the state that the stipulated maximum remains 10% of the annual rent.

While the growing population in Lagos is a factor in the housing challenge, the special adviser said stakeholders and the government have met to address the situation.

“We have met with associations of real estate agents, and they have assured us that the people who are engaging in such practices are not registered agents that identify with their associations,” Odunuga-Bakare said, suggesting that these illegal activities are often perpetrated by unregistered individuals operating outside the purview of established professional bodies.”

Earlier, the Lagos Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, said the state is mulling monthly and quarterly rent options for residents of the state.

Akinderu-Fatai said many Lagos State residents are battling to pay annual rents. He believes monthly and quarterly rent payments would provide relief to them.

VeryDarkMan Re-Arraigned Over Alleged Cyberbullying Of Iyabo Ojo, Others

The Inspector-General of Police has re-arraigned social media influencer, Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), before Justice Musa Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations of cyberbullying actresses Iyabo Ojo, Tonto Dikeh, and music producer Samuel ‘Samklef’ Oguachuba.

Otse was re-arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on cyberstalking and the alleged dissemination of offensive content through his social media platforms. He, however, pleaded not guilty to all charges.

His counsel, Deji Adeyanju, prayed the court to allow the defendant to continue on the earlier bail granted by Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon of a sister court.

The prosecution counsel representing the Inspector-General of Police, Victor Okoye, did not oppose the application.

Justice Liman subsequently admitted the defendant to the previous bail terms and adjourned the matter until 24 July 2025 for the commencement of the trial.

VDM was initially arraigned on 22 May 2024 before Justice Olajuwon on the same offences, which are contrary to and punishable under Section 24 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015.

Following his remand, he was granted bail on 10 June 2024 to the sum of ₦10 million, with two sureties — either employees of reputable organisations or federal civil servants of not less than Level 17, with evidence of three years’ tax clearance.

However, the case was reassigned to Justice Liman following the transfer of Justice Olajuwon to another division of the Federal High Court.

Count-by-Count Allegations

According to the charge sheet, in Count One, Otse was alleged to have, on or about 13 October 2023, posted a video on his Instagram account (@verydarkblackman) containing threatening and bullying statements directed at Samklef.

In Count Two, he was accused of intentionally posting, on or about 29 October 2023, videos containing offensive, pornographic, indecent, obscene, or menacing content targeting actress Iyabo Ojo.

In the said video, he allegedly claimed that “one Iyabo Ojo is having an indecent sexual relationship with her daughter.”

Count Three alleges that, on or about 19 January 2024, VDM falsely published via Instagram that actress Tonto Dikeh had diverted proceeds from a crowdfunding campaign for the “Justice for Mohbad” movement and that she was the person behind the anonymous blog ‘Gistlover.’

In Count Four, Otse was alleged to have, on or about 19 March 2024, intentionally posted content considered annoying and insulting towards Deputy Inspectors-General of Police and members of the National Assembly.

The trial is expected to begin in July.

1 herder, over 100 cattle k!lled in fresh Plateau attacks

1 herder, over 100 cattle k!lled in fresh Plateau attacks

One herder and over 100 cattle have reportedly been k!lled in a series of attacks on herders in two villages in Jos South and Jos North local government areas of Plateau State.

The attacks were allegedly carried out by gunmen who opened fire on herders while they were grazing.

Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, the State Secretary of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), confirmed the incidents and accused members of the Berom ethnic group from the affected communities of being behind the attacks, DailyTrust reports.

However, the leadership of the Berom Youth Movement has denied the allegations, dismissing them as propaganda.

The first attack occurred on Tuesday evening  May 13, in the Gero community of Jos South LGA, while the second took place on Wednesday morning, May 14, in the Darwat community of Riyom LGA.

According to Babayo, three herders sustained injuries in the Gero attack. One of the victims is currently receiving treatment at a Hospital in Jos, while two others are being treated at the Military Hospital in Rukuba Barracks, Jos.

“On May 13, 2025, Berom youths from Gero, Ngel District in Jos South, mobilised and attacked cattle rearers, killing about 70 cows.

“They butchered some of the cattle and stole the meat. Troops from the Operation Safe Haven headquarters intervened and arrested three individuals found in possession of meat from the slaughtered cows,” Babayo said.

He further said, “On May 14, 2025, Berom youths in Darwat came in large numbers and began shooting at cattle belonging to our members.

“They k!lled over 40 cows, butchered some, and made away with the meat. There was no provocation-just like that, they began firing at the animals. It was a coordinated attack. We no longer feel safe. I have informed the GOC 3 Division and the State Director of Security about the situation.”

Babayo also revealed that these attacks are part of a disturbing pattern.

“In the past two weeks, there have been similar incidents where herders and their cattle were targeted. These attacks resulted in both human casualties and livestock theft. On Monday alone, a herder was declared missing and 41 cattle were rustled in Bisichi,” he added.

“We are being k!lled daily, seemingly to provoke us. We urge the government and the international community to take note of what is happening to us in Plateau State. As law-abiding citizens, we are calling on our members to remain calm. We also appeal to security agencies to end these senseless killings and protect Fulani herders from further attacks,” Babayo said.

Corpse of Saint Teresa goes on display 440 years after her death

Corpse of Saint Teresa goes on display 440 years after her death

The well preserved corpse of a 16th century Catholic saint has been unveiled to the public.

Many faithful Catholics were left overwhelmed when they saw the 440-year-old body of Saint Teresa of Jesus inside a glass coffin in Spain.

The Discalced Carmelite nun's body was put on display to the public for the first time since 1914 at the Basilica Annunciation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Spain's Salamanca province on Sunday, May 11.

While visibly skeletal at a glance, parts of the corpse are said to still be remarkably well preserved.

Several visitors at the Basilica were visibly emotional at the sight of the centuries-old body.

Many others were seen praying before St. Teresa's corpse.

Discalced Carmelite nuns, monks and priests had opened her coffin so that relics of her heart, hand and arm could be studied. They compared the state of the body to a photo of the same remains from 1914.

"The uncovered parts, which are the face and foot, are the same as those they were in 1914," Father Marco Chiesa said.

"There is no colour, there is no skin colour, because the skin is mummified, but it is seen, especially in the middle of the face."

It came as part of a ceremony of public veneration - which has only taken place three times since the saint's death in 1582, according to Exaudi.org.

The other two ceremonies were in 1760 and 1914, making this a once-in-a-lifetime chance for the faithful to pay their respects this way.

Researchers have marveled at the body's incredible state of preservation.

Boko Haram seizing military weapons worth trillions – Rep Gadgi

Boko Haram seizing military weapons worth trillions ? Rep Gadgi

Honourable Yusuf Adamu Gadgi, a member of the House of Representatives,  has claimed that Boko Haram insurgents have seized military assets worth trillions of Naira during attacks on military bases across Nigeria’s North-East region.

Gadgi made the statement while contributing to a motion moved by Honourable Ahmed Satomi from Borno State.

The motion addressed the recent fire outbreak at a military arms depot in Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri, and the increasing attacks by Boko Haram in Borno and Yobe states.

Gadgi claimed that the scale of destruction being inflicted by insurgents on military equipment is unprecedented.

He warned that failure to take swift and decisive action could have dire consequences.

He said: "I was shocked by what Boko Haram did at Giwa Barracks and other military facilities. There’s a serious threat to the security and safety of Nigerians, and even to the country itself."

Gadgi pointed out that the National Assembly had allocated significant funds for the purchase of over 40 combat vehicles and other weapons for the military, amounting to trillions of naira, to ensure the protection of citizens.

"How can we guarantee the safety of the people under such conditions, when insurgents can seize these weapons?" he asked.

"The National Assembly is doing its best to address security matters, but government agencies must also take responsibility. The President must launch an investigation into the conduct of top military commanders and other security agencies, and take appropriate action.

"We must also summon these agencies to explain why they are failing in their duties."

The lawmaker cautioned that continued negligence from the government and its security apparatus would erode public trust—posing a major threat to political leadership and national stability.

"If action is not taken quickly, Nigerians may be forced to defend themselves, and they could begin to see us, their leaders, as enemies—just like they see Boko Haram," he warned.
