Cameroon’s Alex Song has been given a three-match ban for elbowing Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic.
The former Arsenal midfielder was sent off during Cameroon’s 4-0 defeat last week, incurring an automatic one-match ban.
But FIFA’s disciplinary committee decided that the nature of the offence meant the suspension would be extended to three games.
Cameroon are already out
of the World Cup after two straight defeats. Song will therefore miss
their final Group A match with Brazil on Monday night plus Cameroon’s
next two international matches.
Cameroon were just 1-0 down in the 40th minute when the Barcelona star committed the offence.
A FIFA statement
read: The FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided today to suspend Song for
three matches and impose a fine of CHF 20,000 for breaching art. 48 par.
1 d) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
“The first match of this
suspension is to be served in the upcoming World Cup fixture between
Cameroon and Brazil on 23 June 2014, with the remaining two to be served
at the next official matches of the Cameroon national team.” (bbc)
