Breast cancer prevention: How to reduce your risk

Breast cancer prevention starts with healthy habits — such as limiting alcohol and staying physically active. Understand what you can do to reduce your breast cancer risk. By Mayo Clinic Staff
If you're concerned about breast cancer, you may be wondering if there are steps you can take toward breast cancer prevention. Some risk factors, such as family history, can't be changed. However, there are lifestyle changes you can make to lower your risk.

What can I do to reduce my risk of breast cancer?

Lifestyle changes have been shown in studies to decrease breast cancer risk even in high-risk women.  The following are steps you can take to lower your risk:
  • Limit alcohol. The more alcohol you drink, the greater your risk of developing breast cancer. If you choose to drink alcohol — including beer, wine or liquor — limit yourself to no more than one drink a day.
  • Don't smoke. Accumulating evidence suggests a link between smoking and breast cancer risk, particularly in premenopausal women. In addition, not smoking is one of the best things you can do for your overall health.
  • Control your weight. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer. This is especially true if obesity occurs later in life, particularly after menopause.
  • Be physically active. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, which, in turn, helps prevent breast cancer. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity weekly, plus strength training at least twice a week.
  • Breast-feed. Breast-feeding may play a role in breast cancer prevention. The longer you breast-feed, the greater the protective effect.
  • Limit dose and duration of hormone therapy. Combination hormone therapy for more than three to five years increases the risk of breast cancer. If you're taking hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms, ask your doctor about other options. You may be able to manage your symptoms with nonhormonal therapies, such as physical activity. If you decide that the benefits of short-term hormone therapy outweigh the risks, use the lowest dose that works for you.
  • Avoid exposure to radiation and environmental pollution. Medical-imaging methods, such as computerized tomography, use high doses of radiation, which have been linked with breast cancer risk. Reduce your exposure by having such tests only when absolutely necessary. While more studies are needed, some research suggests a link between breast cancer and exposure to the chemicals found in some workplaces, gasoline fumes and vehicle exhaust.

Can a healthy diet prevent breast cancer?

Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables hasn't been consistently shown to offer protection from breast cancer. In addition, a low-fat diet appears to offer only a slight reduction in the risk of breast cancer.
However, eating a healthy diet may decrease your risk of other types of cancer, as well as diabetes, heart disease and stroke. A healthy diet can also help you maintain a healthy weight — a key factor in breast cancer prevention.

How I Stabbed My Wife To Death With A Spoon – Convict Confesses

A man identified as Edet Okon has been sentenced to death by hanging by a Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos for stabbing his wife to death with a spoon in the dead of night.
Okon, who had earlier been found guilty of the offence of murder by a Lagos State High Court and sentenced to death by hanging, had approached the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal in 2010 to reverse the decision of the lower court but a three-man panel of the court of appeal, led by Justice Joseph Ikyegh, ordered that Okon be hanged for intentionally killing his wife.
Justice Ikyegh, who read the lead judgement, held that Mrs. Okon's blood was crying for vengeance and the "appellant should reap what he has sown blood for blood."
Okon had claimed at the court that he was insane at the time he stabbed his wife to death with a 'spoon' in the middle of the night. He said he had thypoid and was not with his senses. Two family members had also testified that mental illness was a common trait in the Okon family.
Okon's evidence that he suffered typhoid and suddenly woke up at night and engaged in a struggle with his wife, the court held, was rightly rejected by the lower court.
According to the court of appeal, the burden of proving insanity was entirely on the appellant and Okon failed to prove that he was not only insane, but was also not in control of himself at the time of committing the offence.
The justices of the Court of Appeal said there was no medical evidence to prove the state of the mind of the appellant at the point of the offence.

Wife Who Gave Husband Kidney To Save His Life Wants It Back After He Dumped Her!

41 years old loving wife Samantha who saved her husband's life by giving him one of her kidneys now wants it back after he dumped her.

Her husband Andy Lamb was dying of renal kidney failure and was only being kept alive by weekly sessions of dialysis until his wife Samantha persuaded him to take one of hers.

The 41-year-old mother-of-one told the Sunday People:

'He needed a new kidney or he would die. He was on dialysis three times a week. I told Andy he should go through with it. He had children from an earlier relationship and he wanted to be there for them.'

But Samantha says as soon as she went through with the operation she regretted it. She believed her
husband was cheating on her - first that he was having an affair with her friend Clare who she confronted and which Andy denies.

The couple tried to save their marriage and Samantha gave her husband one more chance but claims she later discovered he was having sex chats online with women.

The couple got married in 2007 but in 2012, Andy finally left his wife. Samantha said:

'I would definitely go through the operation again - but I wouldn't give the kidney to him. I hate him. If I could, I'd take it back and give it to someone else.'

Andy however denies having an affair with Samantha's friend but admits walking out on her. He said:

'I never wanted her to donate her kidney because it was a big risk. But she insisted and I'll always owe her my life'.
At the time of the operation Andy said:

'Sam's doing all this for me and I'll never get over that. She is just amazing and fantastic. I could never put into words how I feel about this. If this happens she will have given me the gift of life.'

Confusion as woman accuses driver of ritual killing

There was confusion at Somolu on Saturday when an unidentified woman accused a commercial driver, known simply as Paul, of kidnapping and ritual killing.

The woman was said to have accosted Paul around noon while he was washing his bus outside his home at Sodeke Street, Somolu.

Sources, who requested anonymity, told PUNCH Metro that the woman, on sighting Paul, went back for a closer inspection. She was said to have subsequently raised the alarm and held on to Paul. She insisted that Paul was the driver of a bus that had kidnapped her a while ago.

A source said, “When she screamed and identified Paul as a kidnapper and ritualist; he at first, tried to escape. But the woman held on to him and kept telling curious residents that Paul was the driver of a bus that had kidnapped her and about 10 others a while ago.

“She claimed that she had boarded the bus at Odunlade Street in the evening and immediately became unconscious, along with other passengers who boarded the bus with her. She said that they did not regain consciousness until they got to an unknown destination.

“She said she was released after her captors had used an object to touch her; she was the only one in the bus to regain her freedom. How she was able to find her way home, she could not recall.”

PUNCH Metro gathered that the community development association chairman of the community alerted the Onipanu Police Division of the situation when it became apparent that the woman was not ready to let Paul go.

Paul’s neighbours, dumbfounded by the allegations, were said to have admitted that they had no idea what he did for a living. Although they were aware that he often drove his commercial bus in the evenings.

“Paul would on most mornings go out with his Sport Utility Vehicle, only to return in the evenings and drive out his commercial bus. Sometimes, he would travel for a two or three month stretch on business trips, but no one actually knows what he does for a living,” a source said.

Policemen from the Onipanu Police Division were said to have taken Paul and his alleged victim to the station.

The policemen were said to have later returned to search Paul’s home. He was said to have been later transferred to the Area H Police Command, Ogudu. PUNCH

Choosing your baby's sex: What the scientists say

Of course, this list may not necessarily include your great grandmother's "tried and true" formula for choosing the baby's sex. Some doctors just chuckle at such schemes and say that as long as the advice doesn't hurt mom or baby, then there may be no harm in trying.

Natural Methods for Choosing the Sex of Your Child

The Shettles method is arguably the most well-known natural strategy for choosing the sex of your child. Developed three decades ago by Landrum B. Shettles, MD, PhD, the plan involves timing intercourse to a woman's cycle and assuming certain sexual positions.
In his book How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby, Shettles explains that the male (Y) sperm is smaller, faster, and more short-lived than the female (X) sperm. Because of this, it is better for boy-desiring couples to have sex closest to the time when a woman's egg is released (ovulation). This way, the speedy male sperm could get to the egg sooner than the female one.
The Y chromosome apparently also enjoys an advantage over its counterpart when the sperm is discharged as close as possible to the opening of the cervix. This is achieved through rear entry intercourse (man enters woman from behind).
Parents desiring a girl, on the other hand, are encouraged to have sex in the missionary position (face to face, man on top) about two to four days before ovulation so that by the time the egg comes, only the heartier, more resilient X sperm will remain in the woman's reproductive tract.
The Shettles method has reportedly been effective at least 75% of the time, with the rate slightly lower for girls than for boys. Pat Buie, a registered nurse from Canada, incorporated Shettles' method into her sex selection plan -- described in her book Choose the Sex of Your Baby Naturally -- and claims to have a 95% success rate

The effects of polyester panties on women’s private:

Do you wear pants to bed? Many women would likely answer in the affirmative. However, experts say when a woman does so, on a daily basis when it’s not necessarily because she is having her period, there may be untoward side effects to it!  Physicians aver that the female genital needs to breathe in order to maintain its PH levels and prevent fungi and odour. And that’s why doctors advise going bare below when it’s bed time at the close of day.  "With BV, there is an increase in harmful bacteria and a decrease in good bacteria. BV is the most common vaginal infection in women of child-bearing age."  Part of the problem, says Family Physician, Dr. Grace Obong, is that during the day, women wear a variety of panties and tight outfits that hardly allow their privates to breathe. She says though it’s advisable and absolutely preferable to wear cotton panties, many women still opt for polyester panties, with the attendant heating up of the genital area while the day lasts.  And as for those who may not like to go to sleep without having pants on, Obong recommends wearing of boxers or pyjamas.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV):Talking about the need to maintain the PH levels of the vagina, experts at womenshealth.gov say the vagina normally has a balance of mostly “good” bacteria and fewer “harmful” bacteria. However, a condition, called bacterial vaginosis, develops when the balance changes.  Obong says women with BV may have an abnormal vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odour, while some women may complain of a strong fish-like odour, especially after sex.  “The discharge can be white (milky) or gray. It may also be foamy or watery. Other symptoms may include burning when urinating, itching around the outside of the vagina, and irritation; while some women with BV have no symptoms at all,” she adds.

Yeast infection: To further underscore the negative effects of wearing panties to bed, online portal, Medline Plus, also notes that too much moist in the female genital area can lead to vaginal yeast infection, most commonly due to the fungus Candida albicans.  “Wearing tight underwear or a pair made from polyester or some other material that doesn’t breathe can lock in moisture and lead to yeast infections,” the warning goes.  Again, Certified Sexuality Counselor, Evelyn Resh, says, “I do not recommend that women wear underwear to bed. Taking a break from underwear for the eight or so hours that you’re asleep gives you an opportunity to ‘air-out’ down there! Best to have an underwear-free zone while sleeping.”  And while yeast infection is not a sexually transmitted illness, physicians say some men will develop symptoms such as itching and a rash on the penis after having sexual contact with an infected partner.  The symptoms of yeast infection are as obnoxious as they are embarrassing, and they include abnormal vaginal discharge, which ranges from a slightly watery, white discharge to a thick, white, chunky discharge; painful intercourse, painful urination, redness and swelling of the vulva; and itching in the vagina and the labia. You may also feel burning sensation when you have yeast infection. The online physician, Dr. Mehmet Oz, counsels, “It’s time to go on natural. You don’t want it to be so moist down there. Let it dry out a little bit.” The reason for this timely advice, Oz says, is because the underpants can abrade on your skin a little bit, and can cause pimples. And you don’t want that. -

PDP Regains Majority in the House of Representatives as three members from Adamawa state cross back to PDP.

PDP Regains Majority In The House Of Reps **as three Adamawa House members crossed back from APC to PDP. **PDP now have 174 members, while APC have 169. The rest members belong to APGA, LP, Accord and DPP. **18 former PDP lawmakers that joined APC plan to cross back to the PDP. The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have regained the majority of the House of Representative which they lost two months ago when 37 of its members cross-carpeted to APC, leaving APC with 172, while PDP was left with only 171. The drama that change the equation in the House is that 3 house members from Adamawa state who had earlier pitched tent with the APC, dramatically recapitulated and carpet-crossed back to PDP. The members are Hon Aishatu, Hon Ahmed Aminu Tukur and Hon Gibson Nathaniel. This leaves the PDP with a slight majority of 174, while the fortune of APC deminished to 169 members. According PDP House leadership that spoke with Hope For Nigeria, there are serious indications that about 18 of those who joined APC are coming back to PDP as they claimed that the problems that prompted them to leave PDP before are no longer existing. Other sources stated that the lawmakers on consulting with political lawyers about their cross-carpeting to APC were told that they are likely lose their seats as they law is very clear on that and there is a recent ruling which spelt out that there was no division in the PDP, as claimed by the rebelling groups. - Hope For Nigeria.

Peter Obi takes over from Ojukwu as APGA National leader, Chairman BOT.

The Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has appointed the Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its National Leader and Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) to replace the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. The NWC made the appointment during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party which held on Saturday in Awka, the Anambra state capital. APGA National Chairman, Victor Umeh, had in early December 2013 read a communique after the NWC meeting, stating that the choice of Obi was due to his contributions towards keeping the party alive in the past 11 years and for particularly ensuring that an APGA member succeeds him on March 17, 2014 when his tenure ends. According to the APGA National Chairman, “the National Working Committee noted the great contributions made by His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi (CON) towards keeping the party alive in the past 11 years of his membership of our great party and particularly for ensuring that an APGA governor will succeed him on 17th March 2014, a promise made and faithfully kept. “Obi’s recommendation to step into Ojukwu’s shoes as the National Leader and Chairman of the BOT is based on his performance, financial discipline, and commitment to APGA in the past 11 years. He never contemplated leaving the party, his sterling performance led to the superlative performance we recorded in the Anambra governorship election, which also led to the landmark victory APGA recorded in the Anambra elections”, he added. Umeh stressed that “You will recall that Okorocha strayed into our ranks, we supported him; despite the fact that he has never won an election in his life, we supported him and less than two years he defected to another party”. Also appointed were 25 members of the Board of Trustees with Peter Obi as the chairman. A vote of confidence was also passed on the leadership of the party led by the embattled factional chairman, Chief Victor Umeh, who presided over the meeting. Other items in the list of agenda include setting up of committee for the Review of the Party Constitution, Mandating the National Working Committee to fill all existing vacancies in the National Working Committee and fixing a date for the National Convention.-

Nasarawa Woman Disowns Cat For Being Gay

A middle-aged woman (names withheld) publicly disowned her cat which she had kept for seven years as a pet, yesterday in Lafia, Nasarawa state.

She stated her reason was due to its “unnatural sexual behavior” which she finds disturbing and “a contradiction of the laws of nature.” And by this, the cat has made record as the first cat to be declared publicly gay and disowned by its owner.

According to the owner, the cat named bull is alleged to be in the habit of making sexual advances only to the male cats in the house even though there are several other female cats.

Leadership Newspapers reports:

Neighbours attested that none of the other cats born while the cat was in the house has it’s due colour, lending credence to the fact that it has not been able to mate with other female cats in its home or anywhere in the environ.

The cat owner who expressed a strong belief in the divine purpose of creating male and female of every creature to fulfil an ordained purpose of procreation said, “anybody interested in this gay cat can have it because I have no further use of it.”

The cat’s renunciation which attracted members of the public was however dramatic as no one wanted to take ownership of such a cat.
After its rejection, many residents of the area have been thronging the house located on Gboko Street, Tudun Gwandara area of Lafia, the state capital to see things for themselves

When LEADERSHIP visited the area people, especially youths, were seen in groups cracking joks about the incident.
