Elderly Woman Tests Positive To Ebola In Port Harcourt

Punch reports that the three people who were taken for the EVD quarantine were  a doctor and a pharmacist who tested negative while the elderly woman tested positive for the deadly disease. It was said that the elderly woman, contracted the virus in Good Heart Hospital, the health facility where Iyke Enemuo, the doctor who treated a Nigerian ECOWAS diplomat, Koye Olu-Ibukun, died last week. The elderly woman was said to have shared the same room with Enemuo when he was admitted at the Good Heart Hospital.
Ebola virus
The doctor and a pharmacist who are members of staff of Sam Steel Clinic, a health facility founded by   Enemuo have however been allowed to go home but they are still under serious medical surveillance. However, the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, and the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker, have made it known that Enemuo whose sister, Chinyere,   was taken to the quarantine centre, will be buried next week. This was made known  in Abuja and Port Harcourt yesterday at the opening of the 2nd National Council on Health meeting on the outbreak of the EVD in Nigeria.
The health minister also revealed that the Federal Government has indicated interest to participate in the clinical trials of two Japanese vaccines to combat the deadly virus rampaging the nation. He said the Federal government has also applied for other experimental drugs, including TKM-Ebola.
He further dispelled the rumour of an   outbreak of the disease in the Federal Capital Territory, saying the person involved was a sickle cell patient. In his words: “The Treatment Research Group which I had informed you about, has been working hard to identify experimental drugs like Zmapp, and also make recommendations to government on further research on these drugs as well as vaccines for EVD treatment and isolation. “Following the TRG’s recommendations and in consultation with NAFDAC and NHREC, Nigeria has indicated interest to participate in the clinical trials for two candidate EVD vaccines and we are considering that a third may be added to the list. We have also applied for experimental drugs such as TKM-Ebola.
“The TRG has submitted a detailed profile and brief on the oral antiviral agent which the Japanese government has offered to make available to affected countries through the World Health Organisation. We are now considering the profile and brief to enable us to reach a final decision on making it available to our patients. “Our initial knowledge of the agent is that it has been shown to have strong antiviral activity against the influenza virus following phases I and II human trials, it is now going through phase III clinical trials; it is shown to have strong antiviral property against Ebola virus in vitro and in vivo. These and the fact that it is considered safe, having passed through phases I and II clinical trials, makes it good candidate drug for use in emergency situation as the EVD.”
The Health Minister made it known that the efforts of the Federal Government since the outbreak of the EVD has been laudable. Chukwu further explained that, as of August 31, 2014, the total number of cases of EVD in Nigeria stood at 17 while the total number of cases treated at the isolation ward in Lagos State is 14; While the total number of those discharged is seven, the total number of deaths among those treated in Lagos is five. The total of persons currently under treatment in Lagos is two.

Chukwu maintained that the three confirmed cases not treated in Lagos comprised Olu-Ibukun, Enemuo and the elderly woman in Port Harcourt, saying:
“Two others who came into contact with the late Enemuo   have tested negative for the EVD but the laboratory tests will be repeated to reconfirm their status. “Now as of August 31, 2014, the number of contacts under surveillance in Lagos stood at 72 while in Port Harcourt, the total number of contacts under surveillance stood at 199. There is nobody under surveillance in Enugu presently and no case of EVD in Enugu State. “As of August 31, 2014, 278 contacts in Lagos State had completed the 21 days surveillance and had been discharged. While in Enugu, all the six identified contacts have completed the 21 day observation period and have been discharged from surveillance. No contact in Port Harcourt has completed the 21 day observation period.”
The commissioner, further told newsmen yesterday that and had been taken to the Isolation centre in Emohua.
“I told you yesterday(Sunday) that we had three patients, and out of the three, the result came out; two of them were negative while one was positive. The two negative ones have left the centre.“We discharged them but we will repeat the tests because they are still within the 21 days circle of the virus. We pray that they remain negative. “The one who is positive is an elderly woman that was in the same hospital with the late Dr. Enemuo. In fact, they were in the same room. She is there ( the quarantine centre) now.”
About Chinyere, he said,
“She had earlier run to Abia State apparently because of fear of being stigmatised.“We were able to trace her with the help of my counterpart   in Abia State. She developed feverish symptoms and she had been admitted at the isolation unit   for observation and treatment. She is among the 50 high risk contacts on our list. We decided to take her to the isolation unit to make assurance surer.
“We are currently running a test on her and the result will be out by Tuesday(today) or thereabout. We chose to isolate her because we don’t want to go through the same experience we had with   Olu-Ibukun.” “We have decided that within this week, Dr. Enemuo and other high risk corpses in the UPTH mortuary would be buried, according to the World Health Organisation protocols.
“That means that the corpses will not leave Port Harcourt . They will be buried under the supervision of the EOC, Ministry of Health officials, and officials of WHO so that we don’t expose the relatives to danger. “We will take care of all the safety protocols ourselves. The families will be there but we will not allow them touch the corpses. “The families can hold their parties if they choose to, but they will not be allowed to come close to the bodies. We will take maximum precaution to combat the spread of the virus.”

LOL: READ WAT OBASANJO DID AT LADOJA’S HOUSE IN IBADAN!

Click for Full Image Size
Last Friday, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid a condolence visit to former Oyo State governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, at his Ondo Street residence in Bodija, Ibadan, over the death of his mother, Alhaja Alimatu Ladoja, who was buried on Thursday.

The visit of Obasanjo was not without the usual drama for which he is known.

It was learnt that Obasanjo had already arrived (he got to the house at about 7:40 a.m.) and was in a discussion with Ladoja and the immediate past Secretary to the Government of Oyo State, Chief Olayiwola Olakojo.

On sighting the reporter, Ladoja asked how he got to know Obasanjo was around in his house, with a reply from the reporter that journalists had their news antenna all over the country and were always on the trail of newsmakers.

As soon as Obasanjo realised it was a journalist that Ladoja was talking to, he said softly: “What are you looking for here? Get out!” Ladoja intervened and pleaded with Obasanjo to allow Saturday Tribune take a photograph of the trio.

Responding, Obasanjo burst into jocular remarks and said: “You have missed a lot. If you had been here earlier, you would have seen me when I was weeping. I wept profusely and I even raised songs in honour of the deceased. So, take your photograph and we will call on you when we are done with our discussion.”

The encounter with Obasanjo went thus:
Reporter: What can you say about the deceased?
Obasanjo: (feigned weeping)….Don’t you see I am crying?
What can you say about Mama’s life?
Mama, Mama, Mama….she was a good mother. Rashidi (Ladoja) is now motherless.
Ladoja (cuts in): I don’t have a father too, except you (embraced Obasanjo)
Obasanjo: Rashidi has now joined the club (of complete orphans).

We thank God that Mama left a worthy legacy, good children. She left what those of us who are her children can glory in. May the Almighty grant the deceased eternal rest and continue to keep the children. Mama, who left behind a good son as Rashidi Ladoja, truly has left behind a great legacy. But this great son that Mama left behind can be naughty at times. But when I scold him, he listens to me and corrects himself.

Ladoja, others laughed…

From his comment on Ladoja’s mother’s death, Obasanjo was asked if all was now well between him and his political godson, President Goodluck Jonathan.

Obasanjo’s reply was: “Ara e o ya-” (You are not well.)

This response drew laughter from around, while the former president hopped into his Jeep from where he told Ladoja he would not be available for the eight day prayer for his late mother because he would be out of the country then!

It should be recalled that Ladoja had fallen out with Obasanjo after the latter was fingered in Ladoja’s impeachment as the governor of Oyo State, but with the exchange above and Obasanjo’s second visit to Ladoja, the duo have apparently moved on, and have resumed their father-son relationship again.

Touch Not The Unclean Things: Pastor Kumuyi Counsels Nigerians On Ebola

While speaking on Sunday, 31 August, 2014 during a worldwide satellite broadcast to members of  his church, Kumuyi urged Nigerians to develop good health habits to avoid contracting the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD. Kumuyi also challenged Nigerians to do more for their safety and health, aside praying.
“Many people have the idea that it is only prayer that gets them well and make them whole and healthy.
“If you look at the Scriptures, you will discover that there are a number of things that contribute to our healing and health.
“These things include our habits, holiness, hope, home, happiness, hospitality and hygiene,” Kumuyi said while speaking on the topic, ‘Healing and Health for the Whole Man’.
He also added that people should not neglect basic health rules that will keep them from contracting the Ebola Virus.
“Hygiene plays a great part in our health. The Ebola epidemic that people just recognised in Nigeria was first discovered in 1976. It’s been on for a long time.
“If you’re not hygienic, you can contract the disease. For example, If you don’t wash your hands often, or you stay with someone who has the disease, it is contagious; and if there is the passing of fluids from one person to another, you may also get it. But if you keep yourself hygienic, it keeps sicknesses from coming upon you. That’s why you read in the Old Testament, ‘touch not the unclean things’,” he added.
While quoting from Proverbs 13 verse 3, Kumuyi said the misuse of the tongue had also brought untold suffering and sickness on some people.
He urged sick folks to anchor their hope on Christ, adding that there was provision for their healing in the Scriptures if they believe.

How TB Joshua's 'Anointing Sticker' Saved Me - Survivor

Prophet TB Joshua

Omereji Friday, a Rivers State indigene who was present at the scene of the bloody onslaught, attributes his own survival to divine protection.
Speaking at The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) in Lagos, Nigeria on Sunday 31st August 2014, the mobile police officer explained that he was stationed in Nasarawa State when informed that a training exercise was to be conducted in Gwoza, Borno State.
Friday, who spoke in pidgin English during his testimony, said his wife had warned him of the dangers caused by the sect but wasn’t really bothered saying: “We quarrelled in the house and she told me if I did not go to Synagogue Church first, there would be trouble,” he explained to the congregation.
Friday, said he reluctantly decided to do the wish of his wife as he visited T.B. Joshua’s renowned church in Lagos before his journey to Gwoza.
Arriving in Lagos late on Sunday 17th August 2014, church activities at The SCOAN were about to cease. “I met one young man from South Sudan and introduced myself as a Nigerian police officer.
“He gave me the ‘Anointing Sticker’ which he was with and I put it in my pocket,” he continued.
Friday said his wife insisted that keeps the ‘sticker’ which bore the message ‘Let love lead’ around his neck next to his ID card.
Arriving at the military camp in Gwoza on Monday heavily armed, two days of training exercises were conducted hitch-free. “On Wednesday, our ‘oga’ told us to go and drop our arms and ammunition at a certain place before the exercise.”
According to Omereji, the policemen saw a helicopter hovering over their area on an apparent surveillance mission later on that day. They reported to their seniors but were told not to be alarmed.

It was when the training exercise of that day was concluded and the policemen were back in their lodging that Boko Haram militants struck.
Friday narrating his horrific ordeal said: “Suddenly, they called us to grab our guns. If you see how rain used to fall, that was how the bullets were falling. The person next to me was hit by a bullet and died in my presence. I fell down and began crawling. Our dormitory caught fire. Five armoured tanks were approaching with sophisticated weapons.”
“I began to shout, ‘God of T.B. Joshua, where are you? Come and save me.’ ” Bullets were raining around him but surprisingly none hit.
“I crawled to the high wall of the camp. I saw an officer attempting to climb over hit by a bullet and die instantly.” The wall was higher than an ordinary jump could reach by human capacity. “As I prayed, I jumped and don’t know what pushed me up over the wall.”
“It was a warfront. I was the only person I know of who survived this Boko Haram attack,” he soberly concluded. “This Anointing Sticker is powerful!”
In his comments, T.B. Joshua reiterated his previous assertion that Boko Haram was the challenge of Nigeria and not Ebola.  He further warned that infiltration from foreign militants had already occurred within Boko Haram, hence their sophisticated weaponry. (naij.com)

Polytechnic Student & Boyfriend Arrested For Selling Their Baby

A student of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Vivian Iwuji and her boyfriend, Obinna Ugochukwu has been arrested by the police for selling their new born baby boy to one Ehegalara Edwin for N620,000 after complaining of being broke. Luck however ran out of them when the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Imo State Police Command, Owerri got a hint and swung into action. They arrested the culprits and the baby was rescued.
Vivian’s father, Mr Patrick Iwuji was the one that reported the case to the police after her daughter gave birth on the 2nd of August, 2014 and she couldn’t give a proper explanation of the where about of the baby.
“She told us that she was going to the hospital to deliver and when we visited her, we asked her about the baby. She told us that the baby was dead. I didn’t believe her and there was no trace that my daughter’s baby was dead. I had to report to the police. Later the case was transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit for investigation. It was there that my own daughter with her boyfriend confessed that they sold the baby boy in the sum of N620, 000 to one Ehegalara Edwin,” he said.
