19-yr-old, who Tested HIV-Positive after She was Gang-Raped in Lagos, Seeks Justice

Like any lady of her age, Helen, 19, dreamt of a bright future. That dream brought her from her hometown in Benue State, to Bariga, Lagos State, where she stayed with her sister. But in her quest for a better life, her dream was shattered last January when she was gang-raped. The incident dramatically altered her life.

Helen, who is now living with the Human Immune-deficiency Virus (HIV), is seeking justice against those who violated her. She tells her story to Senior TheNation Correspondent, EVELYN OSAGIE.

HELEN (surname withheld) will be 20 years on October 10. But she now bears a burden that is too heavy for her age. She was gang-raped in January this year and was diagnosed with HIV last month.
After secondary school in 2008, Helen wanted to further her education, but being the fifth of 11 children comes with its own challenge. However, determined that she would return to school some day, she began working as a cleaner in a big firm at Lekki, Lagos,
from where she hoped to save for school. She had worked there for almost a year before the tragic episode that altered her life dramatically took place. It was with a deep emotion that she recounted her ordeal.
All was quiet and the street lonely early that Tuesday morning when the unsuspecting lady set out from her Bariga home to resume her morning shift at work. It was at exactly 5:05am, the same time she often left home everyday to board a bus some streets away to Lagos Island.
But that morning, something was not right. She noticed five young men lurking about as she got out of her street’s gate. On seeing their fearsome appearance, her heart skipped a beat. Consumed by fear, her first instinct was to turn and run back into the street, but it was too late. She had been spotted.
“They blocked and grabbed me. They pointed a gun at me and told me to be quiet and do everything they said I should do, or else they would harm me,” Helen said before she was overcome by emotion.
After a short silence that seemed ages, she added: “I tried to shout but when I looked around and did not see anybody except those guys, I was so afraid and did as they said… They, then, carried me to one corner by the side of the street… (She bowed her head). They asked me to lie down.”
Helen went silent again with head still bowed, to hold back tears. She said: “I begged them to release me, that I was on my way to work and that I didn’t have anything to offer them. They told me to shut up, saying they would waste me, if I didn’t like my life. I begged them to spare my life.” Her plea touched a member of the gang; he said she should be freed. But his statement fell on deaf ears, for Helen’s other attackers were determined to carry out their task to the letter.
Fighting back tears, she continued: “The others said he could leave if he wanted to; they then collected my handbag, my purse and the N5,000 inside with my two phones – one was in my hand. I used its torchlight; the other was in my Jeans pocket. They removed the phone, pulled off my trousers and started violating me (Silence)…They asked me to pull off my clothes. I begged them.”
Her face became contorted as the agony of the incident swelled her being. Helen became silent again. One could see she was fighting to hide several conflicting emotions as she recounted. “But was there no way you could have shouted for help?” the reporter asked in an attempt to douse the tension. “There was no way I could have shouted because there were five of them against only me… I was so scared. So, I just kept begging them to release me.”
As her attackers were beginning to enjoy their violent act, they spotted another young man and lady walking towards them. Helen’s attackers also pounced on the couple, robbing them of their valuables at gunpoint. Two of them also raped the second lady. By that time, Helen’s eyes were already swollen, from her trauma and obvious helplessness in the hands of the crooks. The two men raped the girl while the other three continued raping me,” she said in a subdued voice.
On how she felt when her violators had their turns, Helen, in tears, said: “I swallowed my scream, felt very bad and closed my eyes as each of them…(Silence). For my mind e be like say make I get knife take kill them, because it was a very painful thing to experience. Before they started, I had asked if they had condoms but they said ‘No’. ‘’After they finished, all I could think of was running to the hospital and getting some drugs or treatment that could wash everything away from my whole being: my physical body, heart, soul and all. (Again, she lapsed into another silence). I felt very bad and, somehow, dirty.”
After the incident, She ran back home to her sister. Both ladies cried in silence; they felt ashamed to share with neighbours what had happened. As if that was not enough, while nursing the psychological trauma of the assault she got, another shocker happened to her on the same day. Helen discovered that her violators were her neighbours.
“I recognised them: two of them live opposite my house. Before that time, I did not notice them. I see them every day and cringe; I’m always in fear each time I see them,” she said.
Three months after:
Besides the traumatic rape, Helen has fallen into a worrisome medical condition. Last month, she was diagnosed with HIV at the General Hospital where she was rushed to after she was raped. Before then, Helen said she had been “negative”, adding that she knew through a test she did some time back. “When I went there when it first happened, they asked me some questions, gave me some drugs and told me to come back after three months for more tests.
The three-month period lapsed last month. The hospital did the followup test and found that I have become HIV-’positive’. ‘’I felt bad, very bad; and I cried. In fact, the doctor tried to calm my mind; but I kept on crying that ‘I’m finished’. I wanted to take my life because I never expected this to happen to me. They told me life still goes on and that I can still live my life to the fullest. They say people with HIV are can be healthier than those who are negative with the help of drugs. Before I left the hospital, I cried and begged them to help me because I did not plan to live on drugs for rest of my life,” she said.
With tears dripping freely and looking straight at the reporter as if to find answers on her face, she continued: “What kind of life can one live now? I feel so bad; I feel so weak and I am asking myself: what did I do wrong in this life to deserve this? What will happen to my dream of going to school? I have not been able to save for school, and I now am treating HIV.”
The news of her status has added more sadness to her family who were still recovering from the shock of her violation.
“When my parents heard the news, they were very sad and they all cried,” Helen said amid tears. The 20-year-old has since turned an advocate, seeking justice against her attackers.
After living in fear for months, the dread of the rapists forced her and her sister to relocate last weekend. The move has emboldened to seek for justice, feeling she is beyond their reach. “I want justice. I need help. I want those men to go to jail for what they did to me and perhaps many other ladies in the area. These people cannot be allowed to go free. Everybody knows them as thieves in the area; they do not go to work or school but just hang around all day doing nothing. Still nobody has done anything about it. It is almost as if they are using charms. Their father is a very aggressive landlord. I see them always and I’m always in fear; that’s why we packed out of the house last weekend. You won’t believe that till we packed, my attackers are still using my phone,” she said.
Helen’s sister, Stella, who was also in her 20s, said the whole incident has left the family heart-broken. Stella, who lent a comforting hand to her sister, said: “We felt so weak and very unhappy, but there is nothing else we can do but to support her and pray that those crooks would be made to pay and suffer for what they did to my sister.”

Femi Fani Kayode Abandons APC, Defects To PDP,

photo
Fani Kayode in his statement released this evening explains why he left the party.
Read below

I declared for the APC in June last year in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state well before the party was registered by INEC. I formally joined the party, amidst great fanfare, on 7th February 2014 in my hometown Ile-Ife and I registered my membership on that day. The registration was done outside the Ooni's palace and it was done in the presence of the media, numerous party leaders in the state, including Hon. Rotimi Makinde, who represents Ile-Ife at the Federal House, and all the other key leaders of the APC in the state and Ife-Ife including Chief Akantioke and Alhaji Soko Adewoyin the former  Deputy Governor of Osun state.
After registering we proceeded to pay a courtesy call on my traditional ruler, the Ooni of Ife, and from there I went to spend a few days with Governor Rauf Aregbesola who, together with Governor Kayode Fayemi, I am close to and I consider to be friends.
I have stated these facts and set the record straight due to the fact that Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the spokesman of the APC, had the effontry to say in an interview with Premium Times magazine earlier today, that I was never a member of the APC and that I never joined them formally. He also went further to say that had if I had been a member of the APC the party would have sanctioned me for expressing my opposition to the idea of a muslim/muslim ticket. The truth is that Mohammed is not only a liar but he is also a coward. If he wanted to know the truth he and those that sent him to issue the statement could have called me and asked me.

He ought to have done his homework before speaking out. I was not only a member of the APC but I was also a leader of that  party and a foundational member. Yet once I joined I began to see things as they really were.  I have never been and will never be part of a cult and the fact that people like Mohammed and those he represents within the APC are not comfortable with any form of admonition or criticism from senior party members like me speaks volumes. I have nothing but the fondest thoughts and memories for the majority of APC leaders including all the governors and most of the Presidential aspirants but today I have an important announcement to make. I wish to inform the general public that as at today, 2nd June 2014, I have left the APC and gone back to the PDP. I wish the APC well in all their endeavours but as at today we have parted ways forever and my spirit has left them.
My reasons for leaving the party are because I consider nation-building as being far more important than party politics, party affiliation or party formations. I am a devout and committed christian and I cannot remain in a party where a handful of people that have sympathies for Boko Haram and that have a clear islamic agenda are playing a leading role. This is made all the more untenable when some of those people are working hard silently and behind the scenes to impose a muslim/muslim ticket on the party for the Presidential elections next year.

I believe that religion ought to play no part in politics but a situation where members of the christian faith are not treated as equals and where the all the substantive positions of the National Executive of the party are made up of almost exclusively Muslims is unacceptable to me. In fairness to the members of the party there are many leaders within it's ranks who share my views and who are also opposed to the religious agenda that the few have but I am not prepared to stay and fight from within because the very prescence of any closet Haramites on the same political platform as me is something that I find utterly repugnant. I have raised these issues privately with virtually every key party leader including most of the governors but nothing has changed. I cannot be in a party in which the spokesman. Lai Mohammed, only last year said that it was wrong and ''unconstitutional'' for the Federal Government to proscribe Boko Haram.

This is the same Boko Haram that has killed no less than 15,000 Nigerians in the last three years. I cannot be in a party where the leading Presidential candidate, only last year said that Boko Haram ought to be killed but ought to be treated like the Niger Delta militants, granted amnesty without any conditions, pampered and paid and who said, in 2001, that muslims should only vote for people who will protect their faith.
I cannot be in a party where a number of leading people question the secularity of the state and yet those people are not called to order by the so-called party leaders and where such people seem to hold sway. I cannot be in a party which appears to have politicised the whole of the Chibok issue and who are not sincere in trying to get the girls back.

I cannot be in a party where a few of it's leaders are more interested in playing politics with the whole Chibok issue and hurling bricks at our military for not doing a better job. I cannot be in a party in which the role of one of it's governors is not clear on the Chibok issue: this is a governor that has not been able to explain to the world why he insisted that the girls should do their exams in that school and remain in Chibok for the night even though WAEC and the Federal Government had warned them about the dangers of doing so. I cannot be in a party in which dissent and a differing opinion with others on fundamental issues is seen as an offence and something to be frowned upon or to be queried or expelled for. I have been in politics for the last 24 years of my life and all along I have taken monumental risks and been guided by my principles.
I have also exhibited that I have the courage of my convictions and more often that not I have dared to say what many others are thinking but dare not to say. It is clear to me that such sentiments are not appreciated in the APC under it's present leadership and consequently I have chosen to move on. I believe that every religion and every ethnic nationality in this country ought to be treated with the greatest respect even within the context of a political party. I believe that we are all equal before God regardless of our religious differences.

A situation whereby, as a christian, I am made to feel that I am a second class citizen in any association or political party which I am part of and for which I have taken risks is unacceptable to me. In order for any political party to move our country forward you need the input, support and confidence of the adherents of ALL religious faiths and not just that of the Muslims. This is something that some in the APC do not seem to appreciate.
As a christian I feel deeply offended by some of the rhetoric and behaviour of some of the APC leaders and I cannot be expected to remain silent in the face of such expressions.
These are the main reasons why I have left the APC. I wish them well in all their endeavours and like I said earlier many of their key leaders and governors remain my personal friends and will continue to do so even after this.
Thanks and may God guide and bless Nigeria.
It would be recalled that after news broke out in April that Fani-Kayode had left All Progressive Party (APC) for the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party after the he spoke out saying: “." (Naij.com)

Selena Gomez Bathtub Photo: Take That, Justin!

Selena Gomez continues to take her power back, or however she likes to phrase it when she poses for sexy photos begging for attention on Instagram.
The singer hit up Katy Perry‘s London concert on May 31 with friends Cara Delevingne, Georgia May Jagger, Suki Waterhouse and DJ Mary Charteris.
The latter shared a provocative picture of Selena in the bathtub, flaunting her toned stomach, touching her chest and pursing her lips ... check, please!
Okay, so it's not AS risque as that description makes it sound. But still:
Selena Gomez Bathtub Photo
Is this her form of subtle payback to Justin Bieber for the continuous string of sexy photos and videos he’s been posting online since their recent split?
Probably. She says she doesn't want Justin back, but we have doubts.
Gomez has reportedly been devastated lately about her roller coaster relationship with Bieber, to the point where she's had trouble eating and sleeping.
Yes, Justin Bieber has that kind of effect on another woman, and not in the sense that she has trouble eating because his actions make her sick.
In any case, it appears that the singer had a fun girls night out at least.
Charteris appropriately captioned the photo of Gomez: “Looking totally babe-iliciuous in your marble bath @selenagomez. #greeblings #fuuuuuuun.”
Babe-ilicious indeed. Hopefully there's more where this came from. Unless she's serious about becoming a born again virgin ... which we sort of doubt.
Why? Previously, Selena Gomez and Niall Horan were spotted in London, so there's that. Virginal or not, maybe she's moving on from the Bieb after all?
Show Justin what he's missing, girl ... and never look back.Selena Gomez Bikini Instagram Photo

Nigeria Will Qualify To the Knock Out Stages - Mourinho

World renowned Coach and Chelsea Manger Jose Mourinho has backed the Super Eagles to make the 2014 World Cup Knockout stage.

He was talking with Yahoo sports and listed the 16 teams he feel could make the 2014 World Cup Knockout stage.
He revealed that due to his long time friendship with Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal, He thinks they will come out of their group in second place behind defending champions Spain in Group B.
He said: “I’m very emotional, I go always with my friends,”.
In Group C he choose west African Super star packed Ivory Coast and European power house Greece advancing over Colombia and Japan.
In Group D, He refused to choose between Uruguay, England and Italy due to the South American team's strength and having relationships with England and Italy over the years.
He said: “If I say England out, next season they don’t let me coach here [at Chelsea].” In Group E, Mourinho said, “I don’t believe in another collapse for France,” and chose them to win the group with Switzerland edging out Ecuador for the second spot.
In Group F, he picked Nigeria to finish second behind Argentina due to his player John Obi Mikel taking part.
In Group G, he said he is sure no team will finish with less than one point but he fancies Germany and Portugal to scale the group stages.
And finally in Group H, He said: “Belgium has the talent,” but somewhat surprisingly went with Russia to finish first and Belgium second — perhaps due to their youthful inexperience.

How to Cook Edikang Ikong Soup ( Edikaikong Soup )

edikaikong soup

The Nigerian Edikang Ikong soup or simply Vegetable Soup is native to the Efiks, people from Akwa Ibom and Cross River states of Nigeria. It is a general notion that the Edikang Ikong soup is very nutritious and this is very much so. Prepared with a generous quantity of pumpkin leaves and water leaves, this Nigerian soup recipe is nourishing in every sense of the word.
It is common for Nigerians to request this soup recipe after a bout of illness as we trust it to replenish whatever was lost during the sickness. But you don't not need to be in a state of convalescence to enjoy this wholesome Nigerian food recipe.
Ingredients for Edikang Ikong Soup
  • 1kg Pumpkin leaves
  • 500g Water leaves
  • 600g Beef, Kanda, shaki and Dry fish
  • Pepper, Salt and ground Crayfish: to taste
  • 200ml Palm oil
  • Periwinkle - 1 cup
  • 2 medium bulbs onions
  • 2-3 Stock cubes
Alternative vegetables for those who cannot buy water leaves and pumpkin leaves:
Use the following to replace the classic Nigerian vegetables for this soup:
  • 1kg Normal Frozen Spinach
  • 200g Ground Frozen Spinach
  • 250g Lamb's Lettuce (Canonigos in Spanish)
Defrost the frozen spinach, cut the normal frozen one into tiny pieces and mix with the ground frozen spinach. Wring out the water from these and add them when I add the pumpkin leaves.
Wash pick and cut the Lamb's Lettuce into tiny pieces. Add them when I add the water leaves.
Before you cook the Edikaikong Soup
  1. Wash and cut the pumpkin and water leaves into tiny pieces. Put them in separate sieves to drain out all the water as much as possible.
  2. Cut the Kanda into small pieces. Cook the beef, kanda and the dry fish with the 2 bulbs of diced onions and the 3 Maggi / Knorr cubes with as little quantity of water as possible.
Cooking Directions
  1. When the meat is done, add a generous amount of palm oil, the crayfish and pepper and leave to boil for about 10 minutes. The palm oil serves as water in the Edikaikong soup. You should try as much as possible to make it the only liquid in the soup.
  2. Add the periwinkle and water leaves and leave to cook for another 5 minutes. You may have to cook for less time at this stage so that the water leaves are not over-cooked.
  3. Now add the pumpkin leaves and salt to taste. Stir the contents of the pot very well and turn off the heat. Cover the pot and leave to stand for about 5 minutes.
  4. The Edikang Ikong soup is ready to be served with Garri (Eba), Semolina, Amala or Pounded Yam.
