Reps Approve Extension Of Emergency Rule In Adamawa, Borno, Yobe
The House of Representatives in Abuja on Thursday approved the request of President Goodluck Jonathan for the extension of state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe for another six months.
Jonathan requested for the extension in a letter to the House on May 13.
The approval followed a three-hour meeting with the service chiefs and heads of security on the current state of emergency in the three states.
Addressing a news conference, the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Rep. Zakari Mohammed, said the House voted unanimously for extension for the stability of the country.
Zakari said the service chiefs had also assured them that the extension would further consolidate the gains of the past one year period of the rule.
“We were given all the assurances by our service chiefs that they are on top of the situation’’, he said.
Rep. Ezekiel Adaji (PDP-Benue), said the House had no option than to approve the President’s request for the extension.
“I think we have no option, we must accept that this is a war and I think we are winning, so let them consolidate’’, he said.
“That is why we need this briefing, we have seen where there are loopholes and we have given them some recommendations.
Rep. Abiodun Balogun (APC-Ogun), said after the briefing, the House discovered that there was need for the extension of the state of emergency in the three states.
He said that it was agreed that the military must also justify the extension granted as the House would not grant another state of emergency after this.
Rep. Nnenna Ukeje (PDP-Abia), said they approved the state of emergency to give the Nigerian army time to do the work they had signed to do.
According to her, the House has shown, with the approval of the extension of emergency rule, the quest to end insurgency in the country.
Parliament did a responsible thing today and that is to extend the state of emergency in the three states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno.
“We hope that we will curb this insurgence and bring back the Chibok girls and hopefully, put an end to terrorism in Nigeria’’, she said.
Rep. Pally Iraise (APC- Edo), said that any solution proffered to put an end to terrorism in Nigeria was welcome.
“We have given them the extension that they seek; it is now for us to follow up and be sure that whatever needed to be done will be done within this extension.
“In the next three to six months, we want to see an end to this menace of terrorism’’, she said.
The emergency rule was extended for another six months, beginning from Nov. 12, 2013 after same was approved by the National Assembly

How Boko Haram's Attempt to Attack Lagos Failed
It
has been alleged that an attempt by terrorists to bomb Lagos, on
Thursday was foiled by Police in the state, as three substances
suspected to be bombs were discovered in the heart of Lagos Island by
the Police. Foreigner, suspected to be connected with the bombs was
arrested by an official of Central Business district (CBD).
The bombs which have been programmed to explode around 1.00 pm on Thursday when traders and commuters who will enter a Lagos bus, known as LAGBUS could have line-up to board buses to their respective destinations, was taken away by the Police bomb squad from Ikeja Police Command.
According to an eye witness, the grenades which could have been planted in front of the Union Homes company gate along Nnamdi Azikwe road, Tom Jones area, opposite Access Bank branch and the Lagos State Development Property Corporation (LSDPC) house was discovered by one of the Police Mobile security man attached to the Homes at about 8.10 am.
It was revealed that the policeman became suspicious about a man who earlier came with a Jeep and started distributing N1, 000 notes to beggars at the spot and later asked them to vacate the area before he drove off.
The policeman was said to have gone there to know what was happening when he discovered the grenades and immediately alert other policemen around and officials of CBD to chase traders and passers-by away from the spot.
The Police on the Island were immediately alerted and occupants at different offices and shops within the area were evacuated so as to prevent casualty, while the Police Anti-Bomb Units were also informed.
It was during the exercise that a foreigner suspected to be an indigene of Niger or Sudan came out of the crowds and was heading towards the grenades when the CBD man named Kareem Saidi asked him to go back which he refused.
"I asked him to go back, he refused and insisted on going to the spot of the grenades. I then arrested him and handed him over to the Policemen from Ebute-Ero station who took him away to their station," he said.
One of the Anti-bomb squad men who took away the grenades around 10.45am was quoted as saying that the bombs have been programmed to explode around 1.00 pm which could have caused heavy disaster.
It was gathered that if the bombs were not discovered and exploded, all the structures within 70 metres will be highly affected.
The business activities in the area which was disturbed for about four hours later came back after the bombs have been taken away, while police vehicles, including Anti-bomb truck were stationed at the place.

What Does Your Boyfriend Do for A Living? And Do You Really Know Him?
What does your boyfriend do for a living?
Is it an honest and transparent occupation or profession?
Would you be proud to say it openly or something you are ashamed to admit?
It matters these days of interesting times in Nigeria with many covetous men and millions unemployed men in every state and most of them are under peer pressure to live up to the expectations of their community and society.
Every one of them wants to impress his girlfriend, even if he cannot afford a sanitary pad.
Many girls want the good fun filled life and so they will even sleep with guys they don't know where they live or where they work.
That was how a female senior executive with a Master's degree got pregnant for a lying jobless guy she never knew his real residence.
They met at a club, had sex at a guest house and the rest at her residence and she got pregnant. And now when she found out the bitter truth, she was so heart broken that she wanted to commit suicide, because she became the laughing stock of her peers.
Who wondered how she could be fooled by a man who did not even finish high school and was not even articulate?
Don't be afraid to ask and find out things you are not comfortable with once you have noticed them about your boyfriend.
The company he keeps and where he likes to hang out.
Lest we forget, there is no male criminal who does not have a girlfriend or wife?
How can you date a guy for even six months without knowing where he lives and what he does for a living?
Why I am asking?
This story will open your eyes;
I had a girlfriend for over three years who never knew my residence and she was an undergraduate of a top old generation university in Nigeria.
She was only lucky I am a good guy.
Others have not been that lucky as they fell into the wrong hands and ended up either messed up or dead.
Lest you forget, in every relationship, your life is at stake. And wrong choice of a boyfriend can ruin you for life.
Moreover, a guy claiming to have a good job is not enough.
If he has a good job, he must also have a good home. And please, don't forget that having a nice looking house does not mean he has a good home.
What makes a good home is the goodness in it for your happiness and security. And not the lifestyle of luxury of the owner.
A brute living in a posh house is not better than a bull in a china shop and does not have a good home.
I know a girlfriend who never knew the real residence of her boyfriend until their wedding day and it was no longer the nice three bedroom flat, but a dingy single room in a ghetto.
Know where he lives, how he lives and where he works and it would be best to visit his residence and office without notice, because telling him you want to visit him gives him enough time to set you up with a fake residence and fake office.
Taking your time to know a guy before dating him will save you from the terrible choices of others who failed to do so and are now wetting their pillows with tears of regrets.

BBC Africa just tweeted the following:
The Kenyan National Disaster Operation Centre said the first explosion occurred in a minibus, the second in the large open-air Gikomba market.
Police sources stated that they suspect the blast had been caused by an improvised explosive device.
The bombings took place two days after the UK, France and the US warned there was a high threat of attacks in Kenya.
It could be recalled that hundreds of British tourists were evacuated recently from the resort area of Mombasa amid warnings of an attack.
British tour companies have suspended flights to Mombasa, Kenya's second largest city.
Kenya had rebuked countries that issued warnings for their citizens.

34 Year Old U.S. Woman Arrested for Posing as 15 Year Old High School Student
A 34-year-old woman fooled people into thinking she was a 15-year-old high school student.
The woman, whose real name is Charity Johnson, adopted a fictitious identity - Charity Stevens, a teenage girl who was an orphan and was abused as a child.
She was arrested on Monday, over six months after she enrolled in New Life Christian High school pretending to be a student, Daily Mail reports.
Johnson told her fake sad story to 30-year-old Tamica Lincoln,
who was a co-worker at McDonald’s. Lincoln was moved by Johnson’s
story, and allowed her to move into her home, becoming her guardian.
‘She acted like a kid. She did her homework. She got good report cards,’ said Lincoln.
Suspicions about her identity began to arise after she attempted to join a group that helps children in need.
A background check was later conducted by her employers, revealing her web of lies.
When Johnson was arrested, “…teachers
were crying and students were crying, and her best friend just couldn’t
believe it,” Lincoln said.
She has been charged with giving false, fictitious information. She is currently in a county Jail on $500 bond.

Girl Bites Off Man’s Finger For Selling Blackberry Phone Filled With Stones In Lagos
A man identified simply as Ifeanyi had his finger bitten by a girl yesterday for selling a blackberry phone filled with stones to her at Westminster Market, along Apapa- Oshodi expressway, Olodi -Apapa area of Lagos State.
The girl, Nkechi had bought a fairly-used phone from Ifeanyi at the sum of N15,000 on Monday and was instructed by the seller to charge the battery for at least four hours before usage after he had tested if the phone is working in her presence.
Unknown to her, one of the members of the seller’s syndicate swapped the one that had been tested with a dud one. When she got home, she plugged the phone to charge it as instructed but was shocked when no light came on. She then opened the battery, only to discover stones smartly packed inside the phone.
She quickly went back to the seller of the phone who attempted to escape when he saw her but she quickly grabbed him and raised an alarm which attracted passersby.
As Ifeanyi tried to loosen her grip on him, she was said to have bitten his finger.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital while some youths who sympathised with the girl helped her to escape
from the scene.
An eyewitness who identified himself as Ikenna, confirmed that Ifeanyi is a member of a syndicate that defrauds people through sales of fake items at the Westminster market.
ANC Wins Again In South Africa
The African National Congress, ANC has secured majority votes in the recent South African Elections.
This was the first election held since the death of their iconic leader Nelson Mandela in December last year.
The ANC acquired only 62.15 per cent of the votes, the lowest ever since independence, they had 62.65 per cent (1994), 66.35 per cent (1999), 69.69 per cent (2004), 65.9 per (2009).
The foremost opposition, the centrist Democratic Alliance, DA acquired only 22% , a 5% increase from its last outing in 2009.
However now ANC faces a unique problem, as they did not get the two-thirds majority it requires in parliament to push its legislations, They now have to form and depend on alliances.
Julius Malema led leftwing Economic Freedom Fighters came in third with only 5.51%.
This is South Africa's third election since Apartheid and voter turnout was an impressive 73%.
Nelson Mandela had led ANC during his fight against Apartheid and since 1994 they have dominated the South African elections.
Jabulani Radebe, revealed the numbers where not suprising, he said: "I am not surprised because even though people have criticised President Zuma, we as members separate the leaders from the party. It means that even if Zuma is gone tomorrow, it shows the ANC is still strong and will go on," he said.
"It seems the opposition spent a lot of time attacking the ANC rather than offering alternatives and maybe this benefitted us," Radebe added.
