8 Health Tips for Managing HIV

Living with HIV requires taking care of yourself and taking extra precautions to ensure your health, such as preventing STDs and other infections. Learn how to practice a healthy lifestyle to better manage HIV.

 health tips for managing hiv

When you’re living with HIV, it’s more important than ever to protect your immune system to maintain overall health. By keeping your body as healthy as possible, it’s much better equipped to fight off viruses and other types of infections, says Kristin Englund, MD, associate staff member of the department of infectious disease at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
People living with HIV need to incorporate healthy habits into their lifestyle. Follow these eight tips for healthy living with HIV:
1. Practice safe sex. This is paramount on the list. Says Dr. Englund, "Practicing safe sex is essential.” Understand how the virus is transmitted to reduce the risk of infecting others. Use condoms not only to avoid the spread of HIV, but also to protect both you and your partner against other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and other types of infections.
2. Get tested for other STDs. If you have another STD, also known as sexually transmitted infections, or STIs, you may be more likely to transmit both HIV and your other STD to someone else. STDs can also worsen HIV and make the disease progress more rapidly. And HIV can make STDs more difficult to treat, so you’ll want to address an STD as soon as possible. Getting tested is a must because many STDs don't cause any symptoms — without testing, you may not even realize you have one.
3. Prevent infections and illnesses. Since HIV makes your immune system less effective, you become more susceptible to every virus, bacteria, and germ you're exposed to. Wash your hands frequently, and stay away from sick people to stay as healthy as possible. Also stay up-to-date on all of your vaccinations to reduce your risk of preventable illnesses.
4. Follow doctor's orders about your prescriptions. It's crucial to take your HIV medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Skipping even one day of medication can give the virus an opportunity to become resistant to the drugs, making them ineffective against the virus, says Englund. Be sure to take prescriptions at the same time every day, and always have your medication with you so that if you are away from home, you won’t have to miss a dose.
5. Don't abuse drugs or alcohol. Alcohol and drug overuse can contribute to feelings of depression. Avoid illegal drugs and take prescription drugs as directed by your doctor to help protect your immune system. Avoiding drug abuse can also help to prevent cognitive (thinking and reasoning) impairment, which is important in minimizing HIV-related dementia.
6. Quit smoking. Giving up cigarettes is beneficial for anyone. Stopping all tobacco use will help you live healthier and feel better, according to Englund, as well as prevent a number of health problems and reduce your risk of serious events like heart attack and stroke.
7. Manage physical and emotional health problems. Depression is common among people with HIV, and the stress associated with having HIV can worsen depression symptoms. What’s more, both stress and depression can worsen physical pain associated with HIV. Keeping stress, depression, and pain under control can help improve your physical and emotional health, making life with HIV easier. See a mental health professional if you feel you’re experiencing depression, and be sure to mention that you’re taking medication for HIV to avoid potential drug interactions between depression and HIV medicines.
8. Exercise mind and body. Physical and mental exercise can keep your mind and body strong. Regular physical exercise, such as walking, biking, running, swimming, or another activity you enjoy, keeps you physically fit and can keep both stress and depression in check. Physical exercise significantly helps the immune system as well. Mental exercise — doing a daily crossword puzzle or playing brain-challenging games — can help maintain your cognitive health. Exercise your memory, concentration, and attention, all of which can be affected by HIV.
The keys to staying healthy with HIV are within your control. Live a healthy lifestyle. Fuel your body with a healthy, nutritious, and balanced diet, and allow it to recharge each night with enough quality sleep. Treat your body well to strengthen it, so that it can defend against illnesses that could threaten your health.

Obesere rape saga: Case transferred to SCID:

LAGOS — There were indications, yesterday, that the case involving popular Fuji musician, Alhaji Abass Akande, also known as Obesere, arrested for allegedly raping a 29-year-old business woman, Miss Olanike Olaiya, in his Okota residence may have been  transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID.  Sources told Vanguard, yesterday, that the embattled musician preferred the SCID to the  Isolo Police division because the DPO had insisted on the matter going to court.  Normally, it is  the Divisional Police Officer at Isolo Division, Aminu Ibrahim, that should have ordered the transfer of the case to SCID for further investigations.  But Obesere was alleged to have used his contacts in the police to have the case transferred to SCID.

                                       Obesere
A police source also disclosed that Obesere found it difficult to pressurize the DPO at Isolo into striking out the matter or persuade the victim to accept a settlement.  The source, who craved anonymity, also said Obesere contacted some top citizens to wade into the matter by persuading the DPO to soft-pedal on the  matter but they backed down when they discovered that the police have incriminating evidence against the musician.  Victim relocates to Sagamu for treatment  Meantime, the victim, Olaiya, told Vanguard yesterday that she had relocated to her home town, Sagamu in Ogun State, where she is currently receiving treatment for the rape incident.  Olaiya, who spoke with Vanguard on the telephone, said: “As I speak with you, I am in Sagamu, my home town, where I have been  receiving traditional treatment since the incident occurred.  I bled for more than two weeks —Victim  “I bled for more than two weeks after Alhaji Obesere raped me and inserted his ring into my private part. The incident occurred on February 12, 2013 and I have spent a lot of money treating myself.  “The DPO, Isolo Police division, took pity on me and refused to give in to Obesere’s pressure to  strike out the case and God will bless him for that.  “But last week I was informed that the case had been transferred to the SCID and my Investigating Police Office, IPO, at Isolo asked me to come to the station on Tuesday for the transfer.  “But when I got to the SCID, I discovered the IPO, who took over the case, one Mr. Jacob, I don’t know his rank, became hostile to me.  “You need to see how this man treated me. He started by asking me to write a new statement and when I tried to explain that I had written a statement at Isolo division, he rebuffed my explanation and insisted I wrote a new one.  They threatened to kill me  “Afterwards, they started threatening me. The IPO, Alhaji Obesere, and some of his brothers, who were present there, asked me to stop the journalists from publishing my story and if I don’t, I will be a dead person.  “I was so frightened when they said this and each time my phone rang someone would pick it up to know who was calling.  “Later, they discovered  I wasn’t going to break, then they started begging me and promised to take care of me. Alhaji Obesere even said he was going to take me to the best hospital for treatment.  “At the end, I rose to leave and they offered to drop me in my place. The IPO also insisted that I should follow them. Instead of taking me to my area, they took me to Obesere’s house and the woman who introduced me to him was also there.  “While I was with them I alerted the police at Isolo and told them where I was.  “But yesterday, they called after they saw the publication and started threatening again to kill me.  “I am highly terrified, that was why I travelled back  to my home to get some treatment.”

It recently went viral on social media that the Kukere master Iyanya would be featured in a Nollywood movie, alongside his ex lover, Yvonne Nelson, many wondered if the former lovebirds would be comfortable with each other on set; especially if producers ask them to act like lovers again.

Well, Iyanya made his feelings about that publicly in a recent interview. Iyanya said this when he was asked:

Would you be comfortable with Yvonne Nelson on a movie Set?

I have never been with her on a movie set so I don’t know how comfortable I will be.

But you don’t have a problem being in a movie with her?

I don’t have any problem. I am doing business. I am not here for celebration or family ties. Pay me for the movie. If you want me to do a movie with anybody from anywhere, pay me and I will do it.

Some fans have spun tales that the reason Yvonne isn’t so comfortable with being with you in a movie is because Elvis Chuks might have you both do a s*x scene.

That’s bullsh-t. Just pay me. If you want me to do a movie with anybody, pay me and I will do it.

Okay, so you would do a s*x scene with Yvonne Nelson.

I didn’t say that oh. It’s you that said it oh. I said pay me oh. Later I go see am for twitter that Iyanya said he will do a s*x scene with Yvonne Nelson then the girl go come dey talk nonsense for Twitter. Abeg oh!

How to keep your vagina clean and odor free

Have a Healthy Vagina Intro.jpgWe all know tips and tricks for getting healthy hair and skin, but what about having a healthy vagina? Most women are taught early on to cleanse daily with strong soap or use "feminine hygiene" sprays, but this can actually do more harm than good. Knowing the right way to stay clean, choosing foods that will boost your health, and even exercising your vagina are all ways you can keep your vagina in tip top shape.

How to wash your Vagina ..

Lather up a washcloth with some mild natural soap and water.

Avoid using soaps with heavy perfumes, which may irritate the sensitive skin around your vagina.

Clean the folds around your clitoris. Use your fingers to pull your labia away from your clitoris.

Gently scrub the skin on both sides of your clitoris with the washcloth.

Wash your vulva and your vaginal opening. Also, scrub around your bikini line. Scrub your perineum. The perineum is the area between your vagina and your anus. Wash your anal area last.

Keep your washcloth from touching your vaginal area after you've washed your anus. Doing this will ensure that you don't drag rectal germs toward your vaginal area. These germs can cause you to get urinary tract infections.

Wash your vagina at least once per day. If you have sex, you may want to wash it a second time to feel fresh and clean, although washing after sex will not prevent pregnancy on its own. Trim, wax or shave your pubic hair.

Thick pubic hair can cause you to sweat down below, which may make you have some issues with odor. Stay clean during your period. Change your pad or your tampon frequently, according to the directions on the package. If you're worried about how you smell when you're having your period, you can wash your vagina 2 or 3 times a day.

Wear cotton underwear. Breathable fabric helps to prevent vaginal odour. Bathe as part of your foreplay. So are you worried that your partner won't like your scent?

Take a shower or a steamy bath before you have sex. Let your partner wash your vagina for you. Who knows? It might lead to all kinds of fun.

Pres. Jonathan to launch second Niger Bridge

river-niger
President Goodluck Jonathan said on Tuesday in Abuja that he would do the “real ground-breaking” ceremony for the second Niger Bridge in Anambra on March 10. The president said this on Tuesday when he received a delegation of Anambra people led by Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, and Gov. Peter Obi. The delegation, which also included the governor-elect of the state, Willie Obiano, was on a thank-you and solidarity visit to the president. Jonathan said that the launch of the construction work on the bridge was in keeping with his promise to the people of Anambra, He explained that he could have launched the project long ago with fanfare but government must show commitment to its execution. He said that with proper planning and funding now put in place, he was ready to start the project in earnest. “The Minister of Works has briefed me that they have done a lot of mobilisation; we are coming to do real ground breaking ceremony of the second Niger Bridge and other projects,” he said. It will be recalled that the president had, during a recent visit to the state, pledged to launch the construction of the bridge before Obi leaves office on March 17. He commended Obi for maintaining a cordial relationship with the Federal Government. He also used the opportunity to admonish other elected officials and politicians to focus on developing their states rather than make a past-time of attacking and abusing the president. “A number of politicians feel that the best thing to do is to be abusing Mr. President, abusing the Federal Government and so on. “You are elected to develop your state and I think the best thing is to have good relationship with the centre; whether you have a pin or you do not have but one day it will come. “Wearing boxing gloves, jumping into the boxing ring to face Mr. President does not help the development of any state.” The president specifically commended Obi for his people-oriented programmes and for managing an opposition-controlled state assembly without a crisis. He pledged to give his successor, Willie Obiano, equal support to help him succeed. The president also promised to retain Obi in the Federal Government’s Economic Management Team even after he leaves office as state governor. Earlier, Obi had said that it would be difficult for a state governor to make meaningful impact without the support of the Federal Government. He specifically thanked the president for the support given to his state. “I have been governor under three presidents and I know the difference. “Anambra state is your home and we are committed to supporting you and your government,” he said.

Mugabe backs Uganda’s anti-gay law

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. Picture: REUTERS

Robert Mugabe has thrown his weight behind Uganda’s draconian anti-gay laws and hinted at a crackdown on gays in his own country, state media reported on Monday.
He castigated the West for punishing Kampala with aid cuts after President Yoweri Museveni signed into law a bill that banned homosexuality in the East African country.
"They (the West) want to tell us ... that it’s a violation of human rights, that is what they are doing to Museveni right now," Mr Mugabe said.
"The human right you have as a man is to marry another woman, not to get another man to marry, we refuse that," he said at a weekend wedding reception of his only daughter Bona.
Mr Mugabe has previously said homosexuality is un-African and described gays and lesbians as worse than pigs and dogs.
"It’s a terrible world we are in, a terrible world where people want to do things that they feel will enhance their own interests," he said.
The president also said that until recently he had not been aware of the existence of an association of gay and lesbian people in Zimbabwe, and warned he would want to know who belonged to the group.
"I understand we have a group of homosexuals in this country," he said. "I didn’t know until I was told the day before yesterday. So we want to check on who is in that group."
The group, which calls itself Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe, has long operated in the country despite Mr Mugabe’s ranting against homosexuality. Police have on several occasions raided the group’s offices, and prosecutors had laid charges against it, accusing it of operating as an unregistered organisation. However, a magistrate dismissed the case last week.
Same-sex marriages outlawed in Zimbabwe.
In Uganda, the World Bank last week stalled a $90m loan planned to help the country strengthen its healthcare system. The bank’s move followed action by Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway to freeze or change aid programmes for Uganda, and blunt criticism from the US and Sweden.
Mr Museveni signed a bill into law that holds that "repeat homosexuals" should be jailed for life, outlaws the promotion of homosexuality and requires people to report on homosexuals.
