US House passes bill banning transgender from participating in men and women's sports

The  United States of America has banned transgender men from competing in men's sports and transgender women from competing in women's Sports.

This position was stated by the Speaker of the Parliament Mike Johnson in a post on X.

“Today is a great day in America because House Republicans just passed @RepGregSteube's Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act ensuring men cannot compete in women’s sports.”

“Men are men, women are women, and men cannot become women. It’s just that simple.” his post read.

US House passes bill banning transgender from participating in men and women

The development may be a return to incoming President, Donald Trump's policy which then banned transgender in the United States military.

On July 26, 2017, then-President Donald Trump announced through a series of tweets that transgender individuals would no longer be allowed to serve in the U.S. military.

The policy was however overturned by the administration of outgoing President, Joe Biden.

Although it is unclear what the decision of the incoming President, Donald Trump, would be upon the ascension of office, there are however talks in quarters that he may re-introduce a ban on transgender in the military.

Elon Musk sued over Twitter takeover

Elon Musk has been sued over Twitter acquisition.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sued billionaire Elon Musk, saying he failed to disclose his ownership of Twitter stock in a timely manner in early 2022, before buying the social media site.

As a result, the SEC alleges, Musk was able to underpay “by at least $150 million” for shares he bought after he should have disclosed his ownership of more than 5% of Twitter’s shares.

Musk bought Twitter in October 2022 and later renamed it X.

Musk started amassing Twitter shares in early 2022, and by March of that year, he owned more than 5%. At this point, the complaint says, he was required by law to disclose his ownership, but he failed to do so until April 4, 11 days after the report was due.

Musk's lawyer, Alex Spiro, said in a statement that the lawsuit “is an admission by the SEC that they cannot bring an actual case” since Musk has “done nothing wrong.” He called the lawsuit a “sham.”

“As the SEC retreats and leaves office—the SEC’s multi-year campaign of harassment against Mr. Musk culminated in the filing of a single-count ticky tack complaint against Mr. Musk under Section 13(d) for an alleged administrative failure to file a single form—an offense that, even if proven, carries a nominal penalty,” Spiro added.

After Musk signed a deal to acquire Twitter in April 2022, he tried to back out of it, leading the company to sue him to force him to go through with the acquisition.

The has SEC said that starting in April 2022, it authorized an investigation into whether any securities laws were broken in connection with Musk’s purchases of Twitter stock and his statements and SEC filings related to the company.

Before it filed the lawsuit, the SEC went to court in an attempt to compel Musk to testify as part of an investigation into his purchase of Twitter.

The SEC’s current chair, Gary Gensler, plans to step down from his post on Jan. 20 and it is not clear if the new administration will continue the lawsuit.

NLC shut down Radio and TV stations over non-implementation of minimum wage

The Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and workers on Monday shut down normal operations of Lagos Television, Eko FM/Radio Lagos, and Lagos Traffic Radio to protest the non-implementation of the N85,000 minimum wage by the management of the stations.

In collaboration with workers of the three broadcast stations under the aegis of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU), the NLC picketed the stations and demanded to be placed on the Oracle System.

A few weeks ago, the workers notified the management of their readiness to down tools if the stations failed to implement the minimum wage mandated by the Lagos State Government. Early in the morning, the workers blocked the entrance and exit to the Agidingbi complex of the broadcast stations, displaying placards with various inscriptions, such as: “Give us Oracle and take the revenue generated, Oracle is the answer, it’s all we need, Pay us Minimum Wage,” among others.

The workers were led in their solidarity songs by the state Chairman of NLC, Comrade Funmi Sessi. Speaking with newsmen, Sessi said: >"We started peacefully, and we are going to end it peacefully. Nobody is going to push us through the wall. I assure everybody that we shall be peaceful because we are Lagosians."

Sessi continued: "We are here this morning you can see the workers of government in communication departments that is LTV, Eko FM, and Traffic Radio, all here to show their displeasure against the injustice that has been meted out to them. This is the situation they do their work to the best of their abilities and now at the receiving end by being shortchanged. And not receiving the new Minimum wage as being approved and agreed upon by the law set by the Federal Government of Nigeria."

She further emphasized: "This is an injustice to the set of workers. The management has been given the mandate to pay the minimum wage as announced by the Lagos State Government. They are Lagos State workers. Since the government has commenced implementation of the N85,000 minimum wage since November they have never collected the minimum wage. The arrears of the three months and the 13th month they have not been enjoying the benefits. So, why is this disparity for this set of workers even in the face of this hardship?"

The leadership of their union had engaged the management previously, gare iving a 21-day notice to dialogue. After several engagements with management, they gave 14 days and 7 days, following due process, yet there was no resolution. Now, when they saw that the workers were resolute to fight for their rights, they were told to sheath their swords.

Sessi concluded: "Though, the governor has been doing a lot and showing empathy to workers. We are hereby appealing to him to prevail on the management to do the needful and avoid unnecessary disruption to operations in the interest of the majority. We will sustain this struggle until the government listens and takes appropriate action on these demands."

Terrorists k!ll 40 farmers in Borno deadly attack

No fewer than forty farmers have been k!lled while the whereabouts of many others is yet to be ascertained after Boko Haram/Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists attacked Dumba, a farming settlement in Kukawa local government area of Borno State.

Leadership reports that residents of the area say the terrorists stormed the area at about 3pm on Sunday afternoon, January 12, with sophisticated weapons and rounded them up. One of the farmers who escaped unhurt said the terrorists, before embarking on a shooting spree, told them that farming activities, which according to them was banned, has not been lifted in the area, hence the terrorists said that anyone found farming there henceforth would be killed.

“We are the people farming at Dumba. Today (Sunday), the terrorists came and met us in the area. They chased us out of the farm and said that they had not lifted the ban on farming in the area. They said any farmer found in the area henceforth would be k!lled.

They k!lled many of our farmers. It was in the night that we ran to soldiers and Civilian Joint Taskforce (CJTF) members who assisted in taking us to a safer place.

We were farming together with those killed, God saved me. The dead bodies that I counted were about 40 of them. The rest that were shot in the bush and those that escaped with gunshot wounds could not be accounted for,” he narrated.

Also, craving anonymity, a member of the CJTF, who participated in rescuing the survivors, said such attacks on the farmers by the terrorists have been a recurring issue, adding that at times the terrorists would kill up to 10 of the farmers, and that such killings usually go unreported, but that the alarming rate of the present killings pushed them to voice out the challenges the farmers and fishermen were going through in the Kukawa local government area of the State.

“It was around 3pm that the attack occured, and it was around 5pm that the survivors reached us. We used boat to ferry them to a safer place together with the help from the military. About 200 of them that escaped were rescued. They told us that over 40 of them were killed. They are mostly fishermen and crop farmers,” said the CJTF member.

Dumba community is about 7km to the popular Baga fishing community where a large scale of fishing takes place due to the riverine nature of the local government area which borders Republic of Chad.
