Body of Los Angeles fire victim found clutching water hose as he tried to save his family home of 55-years from the devastating wildfire

Body of Los Angeles fire victim found clutching water hose as he tried to save his family homeof55-years from the devastating wildfire

One of the Californians k!lled in the Eaton Fire was found with a water hose still in his hand as he tried to save his family home of 55 years amid the devastating Los Angeles wildfire.

The remains of Victor Shaw, 66, were found on Wednesday morning, January 8, by a family friend outside the Monterose Avenue home he lived in with his younger sister, Shari Shaw, KTLA reported.

Shari said she had tried to get her brother to evacuate on Tuesday night, January 7, as the fast-moving inferno closed in but as she was going out the door, Victor told her he wanted to stay behind and fight the fire, despite having health problems that limited his mobility.

“When I went back in and yelled out his name, he didn’t reply back, and I had to get out because the embers were so big and flying like a firestorm that I had to save myself,” Shari told KTLA.

“And I looked behind me, and the house was starting to go up in flames, and I had to leave.”

Family friend Al Tanner found Victor’s burned body on the side of the road the next morning — still with the garden hose in his hands.

“It looks like he was trying to save the home that his parents had for almost 55 years,” Tanner told the outlet.

Shari said she “fell to the ground” when she learned the horrible news — and couldn’t bring herself to look at her dead brother.

“They just told me that he was lying on the ground and that he looked serene as if he was at peace,” she said.

Victor Shaw is one of five victims so far confirmed killed in the Eaton Fire, the second-largest of the five wildfires ravaging Los Angeles County, which has exploded to more than 10,600 acres (16.5 square miles) and destroyed 972 structures as of Thursday morning.

The Los Angeles area has been devastated by multiple destructive wildfires raging through the area. The Palisades and Eaton Fires alone have collectively burned over 25,000 acres and over 1,000 structures.

Your policies not working, Bauchi governor tells Tinubu

Bauchi State Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed has told President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that his policies "are not working and people are suffering."

Speaking when he received a delegation of Islamic scholars led by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, Governor Mohammed advised the president to listen to Nigerians and correct his past mistakes.

He said: "I am not insulting anybody and it is not arrogance but as leaders, it is a duty upon us to tell ourselves the truth. We are saying it so that the president can correct his mistake. Nigerians are suffering and we, the governors, are also suffering because of the president’s bad policies.

"Take for instance the Tax reform policy. Of course, no government can survive without revenue; if for instance the sources of its revenue can be blocked, no one can run it.

"I am sure you have heard that we are quarrelling with the president. Yes, it is true we are quarrelling because our people are suffering and the president has refused to listen to us."

Governor Mohammed told the delegation that he had the intention of meeting Sheikh Jingir on the matter, saying "You are among the few personalities that can approach the president on this issue. You are one of the people that the president listens to."

19 k!lled as gunmen attack Chad presidential complex

At least 19 people have been k!lled after gunmen launched an attack on Chad’s presidential complex on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

An armed commando unit reportedly shot inside the presidential building around 7:45pm.

Abderaman Koulamallah, government spokesman and foreign minister, said the de@d include 18 of the assailants and one security agent.

“There were 18 de@d and six injured among the 24-strong commando unit that launched the assault, and we suffered one de@th and three injured, one of them seriously,” he said.

Koulamallah, who had a gun on his belt and was surrounded by soldiers, said “the situation is completely under control. The destabilisation attempt was put down”.

He said the attackers were suspected Boko Haram members but later said they were “probably not” terrorists.

He described them as drunken “Pieds Nickeles” — a reference to a French comic featuring hapless criminals.

Koulamallah said the armed assailants confronted four guards before entering the presidential complex, where they were “easily overpowered”, adding that the surviving attackers were “completely drugged”.

Chad is under military rule and faces regular attacks by Boko Haram, especially in the western Lake Chad region.

The country recently ended a military agreement with former colonial power France.

Food stampede: These self-indulgent folks are blind to how desperate the times are for their fellow Nigerians - Oby Ezekwesili slams outrage from FG towards philanthropic citizens

Food stampede: These self-indulgent folks are blind to how desperate the times are for their fellow Nigerians - Oby Ezekwesili slams outrage from FG towards philanthropic citizens

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has slammed the Federal government and other government officials for their outrage at the different philanthropic citizens and organizations that organised food distribution outreaches that sadly claimed the lives of some persons during a stampede at the venues where the food was being distributed.

In a post shared on X, Ezekwesili argued that the comments made by President Tinubu, the IG of Police and other government officials since the stampede incidents happened, show how detached they are from the reality that people are hungry and that well-meaning Nigerians have decided to fill in the gap created by government. She wondered why government officials have ‘’failed to connect the dots on how their serial leadership failures have turned normally quiet food charity events (that used to happen without any risk to life) into de@th traps.'

She went on to pray for the humanitarians who have been charged to court for the various stampede incidents.

Her post reads;

Still on the food stampedes across the country. What are these self-righteous indignation and outrage from public officials and institutions towards philanthropic citizens and organizations all about?

I mean, is it that the well-fed of our society fail to see that it is actually the generosity and social safety net being provided by individuals- here at home and abroad - and their organizations that have kept the poor of the Land going?

Reading the statements of @officialABAT, the IG of @PoliceNG, @nassnigeria officials and their many senior, junior and minion public officials as well as their allies, you can tell how totally detached from reality these people all are.

These self-indulgent folks are cocooned away in luxury and blind to how desperate the times are for their fellow Nigerians who now embrace the risk of death to get a “ loaf of bread” for themselves and their children.

How are these “leaders” failing to connect the dots on how their serial leadership failures have turned normally quiet food charity events (that used to happen without any risk to life) into death traps?

Do these public officials not understand that unlike a few Nigerians that used to need handouts in the past, majority now do and that it is the massive increase that has placed inordinate pressure on the capacity of the humanitarians?

Humility and empathy remain in short supply among our public officials and that’s unfortunate but please stop dragging those who were evidently helping fill the gap that your own failures massively created.

I hope the courts will act in the spirit of jurisprudence and not mere legalism on the matters of benefactors being held in custody for “doing good that went wrong”.

May God continue to comfort the families of the victims of the food stampedes.''
