UNBELIEVABLE! See The Nigerian Rite Of Passage Where Girls Go Bare-Chested In Public [See Why]

Coming of age is something that is universal, but what is one communities’ idea of the celebration of feminism is another’s idea of gender discrimination.

The Nigerian Delta tribes are scattered around and in some of these tribes, the Iria ritual is practiced.

Some of the groups that practice the ritual include the

Iyankpo group, the Ijimkorobo group, the Alagbariye group from Ebeni, and the Saugeye group.

The Iria Ritual is popular to various tribes in the Niger Delta, with some forms of the ritual being harsher than the others. It typically involves young girls who are between 14 and 16 undergoing rituals that prepare them for marriage. In some places, these girls have to be bare-breasted in front of the crowd for inspection. The goal of this is to ensure that their virginity is intact.

The young girls also get to visit the fattening room where they are well fed with body nourishing meals, especially pounded yam mixed with pounded plantain.

In the fattening room, the ladies are pampered and are prepared to dance half-naked at the market square. At the end of their stay in the fattening room, they are changed and look more beautiful. Their bodies are then painted in different colours for the dance.

In time past, it was believed that if one did not go through the Iria ritual it would be very difficult for her to have a child. One of the common belief among the people is that young women going through puberty have attachments to water spirits and so, they gather at dawn to chase the spirits. After this, a senior male member of the tribe strikes the girls with sticks sending them back to the village.

Meanwhile, we would like to hear from you.

Akpabio Discharged From National Hospital After Surviving Car Crash

The immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, monday escaped death when he was involved in a ghastly car crash on his way to Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja to join an international flight.

THISDAY learnt that his car ran into a convoy conveying a foreign envoy whose identity has not been determined at the time of filing this report.

He was however discharged at about 6 pm yesterday after he was treated for shock in a private ward of the hospital.

It was gathered that the former governor was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

It was learnt that the accident occurred when one of the drivers opted to beat the traffic light. However, it was not clear yesterday whether it was Akpabio’s driver or the driver of the ambassador’s pilot car that beat the traffic light which resulted in the accident.

A Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) official, who did not want to be named, told journalists that whereas occupants of the ambassador’s vehicles and Akpabio’s driver did not sustain any injury, the senator suffered a degree of injuries in the chest region.

The FRSC personnel, who was at the scene of the accident which occurred at about 7:25am near Bolingo Hotel, along the Abuja Airport Road in the Central Business District, said Akpabio was immediately rushed to the National Hospital for intensive care.

One of the senator’s aides, who was at the National Hospital, said Akpabio was on his way out of the country to visit his wife and children when the crash occurred.

The Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Biodun Olujimi, who was one of the early callers at the hospital, told journalists that medical personnel at the hospital had informed her that the Akwa Ibom North-west senator was in a stable condition.

But the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, who was in the hospital to see his predecessor, failed to speak with journalists when he arrived at the hospital at about 12:10pm.

However, the Chief Information Officer of the National Hospital, Rabiah Labaran, told journalists in her office that Akpabio was brought to the hospital by some FRSC officers who rescued him from the scene of the accident.

Labaran said: “He (Akpabio) was brought in this morning after he had a car crash as I learnt. He was brought in from the Bolingo Hotel junction where a vehicle crashed into his own vehicle from behind.

“Lucky enough, when they brought him after the preliminary check–up, it was found out that he did not have any serious injury. He was talking when he was brought in and they gave him the necessary attention at the trauma unit.

“I learnt that as at this afternoon (12:30pm), he was taken to the private wing of the hospital for proper care but there was no serious injury, though it has not been disclosed what kind of injury.

“It is something he can come over in a few days. He is currently recuperating. He was with his driver but the driver did not sustain injury.”

He was discharged last night and sources close to him confirmed that he would yet travel abroad to see his family and go for more medical check up.

News report said the politician and several others sustained injuries.

Akpabio is being treated at the National Trauma Centre of the National Hospital, in the Nigerian capital.

A witness said Mr. Akpabio was moving in a convoy of vehicles towards the City Gate when his vehicle ran into another car.

“My wife and I were coming from the NNPC Mega Station and we stopped at the traffic light by Bolingo Hotel Junction. When the green light showed and we made to move, there was this siren blaring Mercedes Benz jeep that came from the town and almost crashed onto my car. I don’t know how we dodged but another that was behind the jeep hit the car behind me and tumbled on its side.

“I and my wife rushed out of our vehicle and helped the driver bring out his boss. When we brought him out, we found that it was former governor Godswill Akpabio.

“At the time we brought him out, the siren was still blaring. We put him in the other vehicle and he was rushed to the National Hospital.”

65 Year-Old Landlord Rapes 7 Year Old Girl in Lagos

According to the civil servant mother of the victim, on Monday, August 17, 2015, when she got back from work and was having dinner with her children, Blessings started to touch her crotch and complain of pain.

“I felt the part she was touching and asked what was wrong with her. I thought she was referring to her lower abdomen and believed it must be stomach ache. But she insisted that it was her private part.

I asked if she fell down and hurt herself but she simply shook her head. I asked if
someone hit her there while she was playing with other children in the neighbourhood, she said no. I started suspecting there was something bigger than what she was telling me.

I pleaded with her to tell me what happened. That was when she told me about what Baba did. I could not contain my anger. I was shocked, angry and sad at the same time that such an old man could do such a thing to my daughter. My daughter had no reason to lie.”

Blessing’s father, a trader from Ebonyi State, works in the Eastern part of the country while his wife and the children live in Lagos because of his wife’s work.

He was in the East when he received a call from his wife about what had happened to their daughter. He told his wife to take a neighbour along to go and confront Baba, who denied everything immediately.

Baba Sani, a landlord who lives on renting out Danfo buses to commercial bus drivers, lives just two houses away from Blessing’s parents.

Blessing, an exuberant, fair complexioned girl, was not shy when PUNCH spoke with her about what Baba Sani did to her.

She explained that the old man usually crossed from his house to fetch water from a tap beside their house. She said:

“On Friday, my mummy was not around and he came to fetch water (like he normally does). When he was passing in the front of our house, he asked me to follow him to come and collect biscuit.
“When I got to Baba’s house, he put off my shoes and carried me to his bed. He removed my pants and lay on my chest. When I was shouting, he said I should not shout, that he would give me biscuit and N20.
“When he finished, I saw blood coming out and Baba used a cloth to clean it. He said I should not tell anybody. He gave me biscuit and N20.”

Shockingly, without Blessing’s mother knowing, Baba Sani allegedly called the girl and raped her again the following day, a Saturday.

To dispel doubts about the girl’s allegation, she was asked to explain the location of Baba Sani’s bedroom inside the building and her description was found to be exact description when Punch eventually paid Baba Sani a visit.

Their correspondent spoke with Baba Sani in company of the director of Esther Child Rights Foundation, Esther Ogwu, who the case was initially reported to by the girl’s parents.

The man, who walked with the gait of someone approaching senility, started off by saying Blessing’s mother was an acquaintance, even though the girl’s mother said she had never had reason to speak to him before. Baba Sani said:

“The girl’s mother once approached me about a month ago to lend her N500. She sent her daughter to collect it and I gave it to them. Later, the girl with her younger sister came to my house that Friday to ask for money and I gave them N20.

I did not do anything. I don’t know anything about what they have accused me of. God is my witness. I am just surprised about why I am the one the girl is accusing of such a thing.”

When asked how the girl could possibly know where his bedroom was in the house, the old man said he had no idea.

Blessing’s mother said she had many other co-tenants and neighbours and said she couldn’t have imagined asking Baba Sani to lend her any money.

A test conducted at the Mirabel Sexual Assault Referral Centre at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, confirmed that the girl was indeed raped as lacerations on her private part were consistent with sexual assault.

The case was reported at the Gowon Estate Police Division.

Ogwu explained that she was disappointed that initially the police did not handle the case as if they were interested in prosecuting the man. She said rather than charge him to court, they released him from custody despite the fact that they had got the report of the test conducted on the girl.

The child rights activist said:

“According to the information I was given, the man was pretending that he was insane when he was arrested. Everybody in the neighbourhood could testify that nothing was wrong with him.
“It should not be too hard to enforce the law in this case. The Child Rights Act is there. It is unfortunate that the mother of the child did not monitor her daughter well. There are so many young children in that neighbourhood that could have been victims of the man.”

Baba Sani was arraigned before an Ikeja family court on charges of defilement and child abuse on Monday. He was remanded in prison custody while the case was adjourned till September 4, 2015.
